Flora-Bama????

#21 Postby Pauly » Wed Sep 29, 2004 5:35 am

Excellent (though truly sad) photos dean4...we love this area dearly and it just hurts to see it beat up so badly...

:?: hey dean, a question for you (or any others)....and I know it is a little further west from FWB/Destin you photo'ed... but do you know how a fine dining/drinking est. named "Flora-Bama" on AL/FL beach fared? (so many fond and fuzzy memories I have). Does anyone have or know of good photos of said establishment post-Ivan visit??? I would be interested and would pay $$ for some good shots......

Actually that picture of the Condo with the block wall gone is even east of Destin in SW Walton County what is known as Miramar Bch. and all that damage titled Ivan Damage 001 to 027 is same area mostly along Scenic Hwy. 98 and then the last two at the Circle K by my hood.

Dean - we vacationed at the Maravilla Condo's in Miramar two summers ago. That condo building sure like it's the Maravilla! Is it? Just curious....it was a very nice place for a vacation.

Edit - yzerfan just confirmed it was the Maravilla. Our condo is owned by a Cincinnati couple, on the 4th Floor facing the Gulf. Hope it came thru okay, as yzerfan parent's top floor unit. It was such a nice place, we almost considered going back this year when we couldn't quite find what Destin offers (a surplus of 2 BR/2BA condo's) along the NC and SC beaches. But we finally found Emerald Isle, NC. We almost went back to Destin. Almost our entire suburb (at least 75%) goes to Destin every spring break - teachers, families, college kids. I hear you run into at least 10 other families you know from Cincinnati when you walk into a restaurant. So lots of folks up here were watching Ivan carefully. And many Cincinnatians decide to retire in Destin. I really hate to see all this damage.

But some people still insist that there's no way this was a wind event for our part of Florida....

A picture speaks a thousand words. Up by Century on 4, you would not believe the tree damage up there. We passed one commerical forest that had almost every tree snapped in half. Our friend's neighborhood in Cantonment looks like a bomb went off. A big one.

I would imagine everything along the beach over there has some sort of water damage.

Damage was bad at the Florabama, but the owners are determined to rebuild. (Photo from the Pensacola News Journal web site, which retains all rights to that picture)

Damn Dean!!! I would, at first glance, say that had to be storm surge damage. But, there is no debris laying around or in the foliage from a surge so as stated it has to be wind damage. Do you see any evidence that it could have been tornados? That is incredible wind damage!!! What i do find strange is the walls blown our with little apparent roof damage.

On the bright side, yesterday I got word that the City of Destin feels like Crab Trap park is in good enough shape for us to go racin' there on October 9. Here's what the park looked like after the storm. (photo from city of Destin web site)

Hurray for all those helping with the clean-up in the area.

You see this and there is now way there weren't 150-160mph gusts and I also noted that trees weren't twisted as you would see with tornadoes or debris from one location thrown back against the prevailing wind direction, it was all mostly south to north.

The Flora/Bama is a legend. I sure hope he rebuilds. Had lots of great times there.

Those pics do not reflect wind damage, but storm surge damage. Notice the foundations wiped clean with no debris? All that is now in the Gulf.

The debris was wiped clean by the homeowner, this is over a week later and was wind damage, note they also put a flag in the front yard and neighbors put a yellow ribbon on the tree.

With storm surge debris there is no such thing as swept clean, note the parking lot pic of Crab Trap along the beach in Destin above. Surge leaves behind debris everywhere along with alot of dead vegetation, sea grass, e.t.c....
