WHY?!

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

How about if we call them Bert and Ernie until the real names are official?

Calling Invest99 Franklin isn't too smart I guess... but TD 5 is supposed to become Emily at the next update... NHC has it as one, look at the track. The next dot has a big S on it.

ummm...i disagree. I specifically read in History 101 that Hugh Jefferson, a signer of the Constition from the hurrican-prone state of North Carolina, at the last minute tacked on some pork that gave permission to prematuraly call tropical disturbances by their soon-to-be NHC name.

(It's buried in the fine print.)

Stop whining

#28 Postby wolfmmiii » Mon Jul 11, 2005 12:48 pm

Man, I'm not a pro, not an amateur, and not even a hobbyist. I've been following this site since last year and usually just gloss over all the BS that tends to show up on this board from time to time. I gotta say, though, some of the things people cry about on this board are just mind-boggling.

If people are using this board to decide on evacuations and prepare for hurricanes, something is wrong. That's what the NHS and NWS is for. It's a great place to learn from but the goofy bickering over what one is allowed (or not allowed) to say is ridiculous sometimes.

Don't kid yourself into thinking the masses are taking this site's info as gospel. If people are, then the moderators should make it clear somewhere that this information is NOT official instead of editing and beating on every statement that's made by an individual.

I feel better now

I hope people aren't taking all info here as gospel. That's why we also remind members to post the disclaimer.

What you're not considering is the number of people who view this website that DON'T post. Check out our memberlist on the top of the page. I'd say over 50% have signed up, and haven't made one single post. Also note the number of VIEWS a post has; not the number of comments. There are some crazy people out there... And we don't want any false assumptions being made.

Your first amendment rights have nothing to do with it. Amendment #1 states that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech..." It doesn't say anything about privately-owned message boards and the policies set forth by the owners of those boards.

Besides, not every system will be named. We'll have a handful of storms that will only be known as "Tropical depression # ______."

True it can confuse a lot of people who don't have a handle on things...I kinda confess I'm a little new at this and I figured out why people name them as fast as they develop for their own sakes, but I remembered when this happened last year, I was totally out of it and couldn't keep track of who's on first, etc. This year is a little easier (only because it's still July)and it doesn't bother me, but do keep in mind the newbie that stops by.

yeah i hear ya
its like most of us do it as a matter of habbit, not to confuse anyone or offend anyone or to throw anyone off
with so many ppl posting on this Board, it would be difficult to tell each and every one of them that they can't disclose a named storm before NHC does...as i said, they're usually conservitive on those types of issues

What you're saying does make sense. But if Emily becomes Frank, and Frank becomes Emily (a little hurricane gender reassignment), I suppose Emily could pull a Prince and just refer to herself as "the hurricane formerly known as 'Frank'". Frank, however, will be on his own because if he raises too much of a stink over not liking his former girl name the fem-Nazis will jump all over him and send him back to Africa.
