I'll be 53 in September. I was always awestruck by the news stories in the '50s and got to see the fringes of Camille in'69 while on vacation in Dauphin Island, AL That hooked me . I went to Pass Christian, MS not long after that and got a clear definition of Cat 5. I moved from Birmingham to Miami in '76 and started taking in the local history which includes famous hurricanes like the '26 Miami storm and the '35 Keys storm. I guess I was mentally equipped for Andrew when I lived in the Redlands (Homestead) but I was still very surprised at the wide spread destruction. Hurricanes change you once you experience one first hand. They tend to be an equalizer...putting everyone on an equal playing field. We all are vulnerable to the forces of nature regardless of our stature in life. Once you feel that first gust from an Atlantic Cape Verde Hurricane you are changed forever.

Since the night Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans. I was 4 years old & my family evacuated from our home in Plaquemines Parish to the old Jung Hotel in New Orleans. I remember looking out of the window and asked my father "what is a hurricane?" He pointed up towards the sky and said "that is a hurricane." I looked up and in the direction my father was pointing, there was a light pole with a dark colored partially deflated balloon stuck in the wires (the hurricane had not yet arrived). For years, I thought a hurricane was dark colored balloon. Ever since that night, hurricanes and dark colored balloons have fascinated me.

33- tracking since ts Claudette (1979) so about 26 years now. the part i like is the thrill of everyone breaking out of the routine of life in front of storms, getting prepared and of course the occasional hurricane party, and like that the storms clean up old things (dilapidated signs, buildings and such) but i am not a fan of the displacement of families that lose possessions and loss of life, that is the downfall obviously.
