GREAT POST
Great Post!
Of course all of the "great post" and "excellent post" posts could get a little boring also.
I love the emoticons. In there defense, they lighten things up a bit. Especiallly Brents
when a big storm is on the move.

Thanks for the comments. As for emoticons, don't get me wrong, I enjoy emoticons just as much as the next guy. My comments were directed to the excessive abusers and those who have more emoticons than characters in their reply.

Here's my 2 cents.......
I think a big reason that the season is considered a "dud" has a lot to do
with the lack of a threat of a major hurricane striking the US. Sure,
Dennis hit, but nothing like it smashed into Cuba as.
It's almost as if society expects major hurricanes to threaten the US
during the season, and anything less is disappointing. We could have
three consecutive cat 5 fish, and they would get little or no press,
and little or no concern from most citizens. The threat is almost a
euphoric high that some can't seem to live without.

The ONLY thing I enjoy about landfalling hurricanes is the TV coverage(like on the weather channel). I get addicted to the live reports and there aren't any live reports if the storms go nowhere near the USA... I don't like to see death(although that's not too common anymore) or destruction, but enjoy seeing the weather elements in action, which we can see through live tv coverage. I"m still saddened anytime a strong hurricane makes landfall though. It's tough to see people lose their homes.

Yep that's exactly what I think. And I bet storm chasers won't argue against that either.

Late last week TWC had a "tale of two seasons" graphic, showing the differences in the June through early-July and late-July through August Atlantic tropcial cyclone periods - what a difference!
It was easy to see that the change was not due to a "slow down" of the seasonal activity, but an actual change in the large-scale weather pattern itself. If the issue had only been due to a seasonal slowing of tropical systems, then the pattern would remain the same, but, in this case, the level of activity actually remained about the same for both periods - it's the surrounding environment that has changed.
It will be interesting to see how forecasters explain this sudden change.

Here's an update post for our "What a boring season
" fan club.
From my post above, we should have four named storms by the 31st of August. With Harvey, Irene, Jose, and now Katrina, we sit at exactly four named storms. We still have four days left in August so the potential for Lee to pop up is definately there. (It won't take much for Invest 97L to attain that status. QS shows the possibility of TS-force winds although shear is fighting hard...)
Regardless, the potential exists for an above-average August (I'll take a pause here for oohs and aahs) to join an above-average June and July. By jolly... this might actually be a busy season after all.

I just wanted to dig this post up from the archives for two reasons...
1) Let this be another reminder for those who want to jump to conclusions. Don't automatically think a season will go bust because of a little lull. This has happened every June-August over the past several years... and look at the end result.
2) Check out the website I included in the initial post. During the winter season, this is a good time to catch up on some knowledge. The website I provided is a great resource of education and, best of all, it's free.

wow...if only you knew at the time what was coming your way in a few weeks, and what was coming for the whole of the US the rest of the season. major storm after major storm making landfall! I guess all those who wanted the "euphoric high" got it. Scary to look back on all these posts now, and see how we all were almost mad because we were in a lull...if only we could know what we know now just 6 months ago.

LOL @ all the people complaining this season was a "dud". Who knew what lied ahead. If someone told me in the beginning of August that we would have 27 named storms, I would have thought they were crazy and in need of help!
But this thread is a good reminder that just becuase we come to a dull moment in a season doesn't mean its over. Every season has its 'dull' moments...

You just had to bump this didn't you...
Of course I did! One thing that irritates me more than rubbing alcohol on a wound would be web-yahoos whining about a slow season--during a statistical lull.
In this case... we were well over double the average and people were carrying on as if we couldn't get anything to develop. Once in a while you have to grab these nutcases and slap 'em around a bit with a large trout. (Plus it's fun to stick it in their face after-the-fact.)
Of course, regardless of this post and the outcome of last season, come June and July, we'll have these same web-yahoo punks crying about a lack of activity, blaming every little disturbance that doesn't develop on SAL. Mark my words.
