Our local news is a wee bit nervous as well. They keep stressing that it's still a ways out, yada yada. But they are also advising people to keep a very close eye on this (like they have to tell ME that one.)

I meant the last few years folks ... I know Allison and her damage well, but I meant 2003-2006 period.

And so I don't ruffle any (more) feathers, when I spoke of an unaffected area I was referring to points west and southwest of Houston to Brownsville. I am painfully familiar with the stressors that the Houston area had with Katrina and Rita.

But let's be honest ... other than Claudette pounding Matagorda, most of the Texas coast has had it relatively easy as compared to our friends and neighbors in LA, MS, AL, and FL. ... not to mention the poor souls in Mexico who got hammered the last few years.

What about last year's evacuation? We suffered in a way that was unique from those who were hit. Sure, we were lucky and we didn't "suffer" as much. But we were definitely affected. Trust me....

Yes, I know..

My wife was stuck in traffic coming out of Galveston. She also is a paramedic here in Brazoria county, so we are well aware oh how Rita effected this area even if we did not take a direct hit...

The whole coast has been devastated in the last few years.

Agreed ... and a good point well taken!

Actually, the area from Houston to Brownsville is the only area of the Gulf Coast that has not suffered dramatically in the last few years during hurricane season. One has to wonder when their time is "up."

Thank you very much. Wish the next Cane upon us, will you? Evacuating with a 4 month old child looks like it will be fun. At least we have a DVD player in vehicle to keep my older one entertained.

I know you really don't want anyone to get hit.

Ever have those "why did I hit the SEND button on this post" thoughts? Yeah, I do ... I wish nothing but gentle rains and cool breezes for all the Texas coast. How's that, CC?

I have already seen ppl filling up the portable gas containers. They were doing that this weekend, I guess in preperation. Maybe they are the smart ones. Get the gas while it is under 3 bucks. LOL!

Media hype in Houston? They're gonna be all over Chris here in Louisiana. Katrina/Rita are still in the news practically every day. I know I'll be preparing this weekend because next week could become very chaotic around here.

Well, I went to the gas station yesterday to fill my car up. And they had several people already filling gas cans. And I work at Sears and the hurricane display that is set up near my department is almost bare. Hardware store across the parking lot are already getting increased generator sales.

How much do generators run? I need to get one if it's affordable. But Chris is scaring the H-ll out of the entire Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard.

I think Frank Billingsley already started last night by saying, "If this gets into the GOM it's our storm"....amazing how he has such powers to know that.

Well things can change quick but the patterns in August hold pretty strong. Remember "Usually" a strong High in August doesn't budge much.

Just think...by early next week we could very well be looking at "Rita-like" wall to wall news coverage for days on end. I wonder if it will get the same response as last year (mass exodus out of the city).

I dont' think so. Everyone I have talked to has said they AREN'T leaving if we get another one.

Wether that turns out to be a good or bad decision remains to be seen. I won't make such a proclamation yet for me and my hubby and two doggies, I will wait and see what happens.

The best case scenario is they order evacs and the storm doesn't come....and the evacs go more smoothly this time...plus we get time off work...PAID. :)

Regarding the Houston to Brownsville area -- even Brownsville got some effects from Emily.

The best thing to do should it come our way is for the News people to urge everyone who DOES NOT live in a mandatory evacuation zone to stay home. The problem with Rita was the Meteorologist was telling everyone to leave if they could.
