Bob Case was the person who first mentioned the "Perfect Storm" phrase (he used to work at the NHC, before going to the Boston NWSFO in the late '80s).

However, Bob is long retired, and, my guess is that Steve Lyons isn't too far off from that, either.

I'd have to guess that perhaps someone from the HRD might be selected for the position, since James Franklin and Bob Burpee both migrated from the HRD to the NHC (Dr. Burpee having served as NHC Director in the mid-90's).

Tee Hee..

In my opinion this job takes alot of public speaking, travel and excellent communications skills. If JB could just avoid his old wrestling stories he would do great and then we wouldn't have to get listen to his forecasts alone but the NHC teams with his energy! :P

Personally I don't want to lose Stewart from the forecast discussion writing team, so I hope he doesn't become the next director.

Bob Case- wow! He was great. Loved him on the NOVA special about hurricanes. Was Frank2 in that special in the background somewhere? Who is Frank2 anyway? Just curious....

Haw - I'm not sure about the NOVA program, but, one late night several years ago, I did see Frank2 on a Discovery Channel program (I believe it was a program about Hurricane Elena or Gloria of 1985).

I had to blink twice to make sure - it's funny that when a person gets older, they often forget how they looked years earlier (gray hair tends to do that)...

Frank2 (not my real name)

P.S. Joking aside, just this morning, the thought came to me that it's very important to select someone for the NHC job that is very familiar with Florida and Gulf Coast issues - it would be a mistake if someone who lives outside the region (such as someone from CSU or PSU, for example), who has never lived here, was selected to try to convey to local and state governments, and the general public, who have lived here for many years, how to deal with various hurricane-related issues unique to this region (for example, it would really help if the person was very familar with Miami's or New Orleans's unique marine issues, and what that means during a hurricane emergency), so, if not someone from the HRD or NHC, hopefully someone from at least the region will be chosen - that is a factor that is probably more critical than many realize.

Thought you'd all like to see a photo of the "family" (certain faces unnammed to protect the innocent, though I can tell you the woman is the NHC office manager, along with Max and that "perfect storm" fella - all fine folks):
