I believe that may may show peak wind gusts and not sustained 1-minute winds.

You are right. The map says 175 mph and that was the gust of Carla.

Here is something about Hurricane Betsy I dug up.

Hurricane Betsy had tropical storm force winds extending 250 miles from the center.

In 2004 HRD reanalyzed Hurricane Betsy's wind field. At landfall at Grand Isle, La., Betsy has sustained 1 min winds of 125KTS (144MPH) Cat 4. Betsy intensified till landfall unlike recent hurricanes.....MGC

Interesting. That would put New Orleans under the bad side of Hurricane Betsy. I know you can't compare Hurricane Betsy to Camille and Katrina. From what I remember New Orleans was not horribly devastated by Betsy, unlike Katrina did.

Betsy hit NO pretty good. St Benard Parish flooded in Betsy like it did in Katrina. There was more wind damage with Betsy in NO than Katrina, I was there and saw the damage to compare to Katrina. Betsy didn't flood the city as bad as Katrina did.....MGC
