Here is an article from the media yesterday

Cyclone George intensifying

CATEGORY one Cyclone George is expected to intensify today as it moves off Western Australia's north coast.

George is the first tropical cyclone of the WA season, and the Bureau of Meteorology believed it could develop into a severe cyclone over the coming days.

The storm system has already caused widespread damage, dumping torrential rain across the Northern Territory before it whipped up to cyclone force as it crossed the border into WA.

George weakened overnight, but is now moving over the Indian Ocean and is expected to gather force.

At 9am (WDT) George was estimated to be about 125km west of Kalumburu and 370km northeast of Derby and was moving west at about 15km/h, the bureau said.

Gales with gusts to 110m/h were being experienced on the coast between Kalumburu and Mitchell Plateau, it said.

Heavy rain was falling across the north of the state and may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

The bureau also warned of unusually high tides between Kalumburu and Kuri Bay.

The WA cyclone season runs between November and April, with most activity occurring in the latter half.

Before it was upgraded to cyclone status, the storm caused mayhem in the NT, closing roads, cutting off communities, causing evacuations and washing out up to 5km of the Adelaide-to-Darwin railway line.

Cyclone warning cancelled

CYCLONE warnings have been cancelled in the Kimberley as tropical cyclone George moves away from West Australia's northern coast.

Category two George is the first tropical cyclone of the WA season and the Bureau of Meteorology believes it will develop into a severe cyclone over the coming days.

"Tropical cyclone George is continuing to intensify as it moves westwards away from the Kimberley coast," the bureau said.

Cyclone warnings have been cancelled for the Kimberley coast but communities in the Pilbara have been advised to monitor cyclone bulletins.

"There is still the potential that tropical cyclone George will move closer to the Pilbara coastline as a severe cyclone during the week."

George was 185km west-northwest of Kuri Bay at 3am (WDT) as it moved west across the Indian Ocean at about 15km/h, the bureau said.

The WA cyclone season runs between November and April, with most activity in the latter half.
