I noticed that too. lol. 150mph wind gusts = no commute.

Thanks for posting this. Ahhh, memories...
We were well north of the coast by the time that forecast was on TV. That calm, almost happy voice reading those windspeeds is just weird. As Berwick Bay stated, when we awoke and saw Katrina had 175 MPH winds, we were freaked and ready to get outta Dodge. Hearing Madden's or Berman's voice screaming might have put some folks into a catatonic state!

Great videos! The Katrina one is very eerie and the Andrew one is superb.

Does anyone have the N.O. local forecast? I'd love to have that.

Berwick Bay

LSU, isn't that incredible! I know that those words are part of a generic description that the NHC has on hand to describe the effects of a landfalling CAT 5 Hurricane (or as they say in the W PAC a Super Typhoon--Think I prefer that label for Katrina--Super Hurricane). But the prophesy was fulfilled! Now what I'm about to mention has been discussed on this board before, but here it is.

Damage and loss of life in New Orleans and the Miss-Gulf-Coast are in total accord with that forecast for a landfalling CAT 5 Hurricane. Most of it from Storm Surge. Which is not unusual at all, since Storm Surge in major hurricane landfalls has been known for more than a century to present the greatest hazard in these storms. But many of our most educated (and I say that very respectfully) storm analysts and researchers immediately pop up after the storm to say "Katrina must be downgraded! Look I have the date to prove that windspeeds weren't 155 MPH. Thats all that counts". Its laughable. Trying to put that square peg in a round hole just won't work (and the guy on the street knows it too)! I don't know. Its one reason why I just want to stick to simpler designations for these storms. Tropical Storm--Hurricane--Perhaps Major Hurricane. I also got rid of one of those newer hurricane tracking programs too. Thought I would like it, but I think I like the old tacked up poster on the wall better. Gonna' get out my markers. Green for Depression or Tropical Storm, and red for any hurricane. Not much sense even differentiating between "types" of hurricanes, since any single one can be so awesome (Ex check landfalling minimal hurricane of Aug 8th 1940 in SW La.) If this scenario happened today, consequences would be terrifying.
One last all important question for you LSU (if you're still here). Do we have a MIKE??

PETA may not like it but we need a Mike or we would end like AU, a cheestos tiger for a mascot. :D
Back to the topic, I think we need to thankful for the info we have at hand today, Can't imagine a Katrina hitting @ 1900 like the Galveston cane.
I thought the forecast should say LEAVE NOW.

OK, that explains it. I think a human would have to be a sociopath to read that forecast that dispassionately.

The morning commute forecast was a pretty weird touch too ...

If I saw that, I'd be in my car before the local forecast ended.

I've seen it call for winds (gusts of course) of 70 mph/110 km/h in my own local, a few times over the years (winds were actually cloaked at 75 mph/120 km/h at these times, once they gusted as high as 85 mph/135 km/h). We get a forecast (that usually verifies) of 60 mph/100 km/h at least once or twice a year. I guess New Jersey really is more sheltered than a lot of the coastlines of the Eastern Seaboard.

BTW If they ever called for 100 mph/160 km/h winds in my area, I’d poop my pants LOL. Very frightening stuff indeed.

WOW! Andrew footage always makes me so emotional! When Norcross goes to a safer area of the TV studio around 3:30am, it brings back soo many horrible memories. Then the radar blows away! What you don't see in that footage is the people who would call into the studio, scared with their homes collapsing around them and Norcross trying to help them. I remember it well. I lived in Kendall at the time.

The Katrina local forecast is scary!! I can remember w/ Frances & Jeanne the local forecast was winds over 100mph with gusts near 130mph. It is a helpless feeling, I'll tell you that being prepared helped the fear tremendously. With Wilma I didn't shutter the back porch and when the wind started there was nothing I could and I was extremely worried.

Amazing how strong such memories can be - that Andrew video brigs it back like it was yesterday. I lost power around 2AM, so I didn't see much of that coverage at the time, but I was listening to Norcross simulcast on radio.

As far as I know they don't have a new Tiger Cub yet but they are planning on replacing Mike. The University said that regardless of what PETA says their mascot (Mike) will be captive bred and very pampered.

That Andrew video is surreal. Absolutely surreal. Dude says that it was up there with the worst hurricanes hes experienced, and hes in the outer fringes of the storm? Insane. 156 mph wind gusts at the NHC, and they werent even in the eyewall. I truly do believe that Andrew is probably the second most intense hurricane ever to the coast.

I still remember listening to bryan norcross threw out the night and really him being the voice threw out south florida the night he did such a great job in keeping folks informed threw out the storm. He was actually on the air for 36 straight hours answering phone calls and giving out advice.Ive had the opportunity of meeting bryan on several occasions and love the guy and in my opinion is number 1 across south florida during hurricanes.

I just finished reading his new book and i really recommend you get a copy.
