The current problems should have no impact on the inexact science of hurricane forecasting, other than the fact that the folks sitting at the computers are not very happy at this time...

Some might recall that in 1981, the administration fired most of the FAA's air traffic controllers becaused many walked off the job, against Federal law, but, the same level of air traffic control remained, due to the work of the many dedicated employees who stayed behind - I'm sure the same will be the case at the NHC when it concerns hurricane forecasting during this time of trouble...

As for the FOIA issue, well, if someone leaked the material to the press, that could be grounds for a reprimand, but, it's unlikely that this person will be found...

Still, as someone who handles FOIA all the time, I can say that this was not the right thing to do - it was tempting for them to do this, for sure, but, being clandestine doesn't make it right...

Oh, Yeah, I fully agree - he was already taking some of the duties being the Warning Coordination Meterologist.

Just an update - keeping my ear to the rail, but, as of this hour, haven't heard anything else coming up the track from Miami...

P.S. Gee - my number of posts reads like the pressure in a tropical storm...

Well, looks like Max Mayfield decided to chime in after all (I thought he'd stay out of it)...

Yes, basically, that's what he said live during Local 10's 6 p.m. newscast on Friday evening...

He did not weigh one way or another, but, he seemed upset at even having to respond to a situation that concerns people he considers friends...

Sadly, when I made a weekday lunch hour visit to the NHC 12 months ago, all was peaceful that day, and, my old friend and co-worker (the woman in Friday's press conference) was as cheerful as I'd always known her to be over the past 27 years - seeing them so sullen on Friday was perhaps more upsetting to me than anything...

Frank

P.S. Perhaps it's due to a childhood memory of mine (it concerned someone I knew who was a young World War II vicitim, who was (and still is) the saddest person that my late sister or I ever knew), that I've learned that conflict of any kind can rob a person of their internal God-given happiness, and, is probably one of the saddest things that can happen to a person in this life...

Anyone know if there is a written document explaining/detailing the actual responsibilities of the NHC directors position?

There is likely a position description, but, it's probably not releasable to the public, other than the basic duties described in the vacancy annoucement posted last year on the usajobs web site ...

Yeah, wikipedia is definitely real-time. There have been many "breaking stories" about people which are updated on wikipedia faster than even the news wires I think!

Guys I just heard on CBS4 news in Miami that NOAA has reassigned Bill Proenza and that Ed Rappaport will temporarily take the position as Director of the NHC. Nothing else was said so I guess they will explain further at the 5pm news.

Understood. However this is the thread that everyone has followed, thus the fastest method of notification

Perhaps it is now appropriate to close/lock this thread???
