I do like the splitting of Tropical Storm into Moderate and Severe classifications at 48 kt (Beaufort 10). That might provide for better differentiation at the higher end (no more "just a tropical storm" at 55 or 60 kt, while treating them the same as 35 kt). A better sense of wind damage potential could be provided at both levels. Typically, Mod TS would result in tree branches down, perhaps some small trees, scattered power outages and minimal if any property damage. STS would result in quite a few uprooted trees, minor property damage to weaker buildings, and numerous to widespread power outages.
Storms of 35, 40 and 45 kt would be classified as Moderate Tropical Storms, while storms of 50, 55 and 60 kt would be classified as Severe Tropical Storms.
