The cyclone made landfall in Myanmar on Friday, 2 May 2008, sending a storm surge 40 kilometers up the densely populated Irrawaddy delta, causing catastrophic destruction and at least 138,000 fatalities.

Damage was estimated at over K62,988,000,000 (US$10 billion), which made it the most damaging cyclone ever recorded in this basin.[6]

The NIO and SWIO basins do not retire names. I believe each name is pretty much a one-time use.

Interesting note: The SWIO is the only basin that provides a name for all the letters of the alphabet.

The WMO meeting is underway. The odds are definitely against any retirements in 2013, but we shall see...

Ingrid and Manuel retired...somewhat surprising, since Mexico had been spotty lately (they let Alex and Karl pass in 2010).

Can derivatives of retired names be used as future names? For example, if Ida is retired after 2015, could Isabella replace it in 2021?

Yes, Frederic>Fabian>Fred for List 1. Also with Ingrid being retired that makes I the letter with the most retired names in the Atlantic with 10. Ione-1955, Inez-1966, Iris-2001, Isidore-2002, Isabel-2003, Ivan-2004, Ike-2008, Igor-2010, Irene-2011, Ingrid-2013.

That's even with Isaac questionably still sitting on the list...many of us think it should have been retired after 2012.

Max is already used in the EPAC. (It was used most recently in 2005 and will appear on the 2017 list)

Other basins already made the decisions (read up earlier in the thread).

That is a surprise, but a good one because I didn't like the name Ingrid.

CrazyC83 wrote:Imelda and Mario are the replacements.

I don't like that I name either, sucks. How do you pronounce Imelda? Also, lol to Mario...Hurricane Mario everyone! :)

I agree about Isaac, that was awful. I consider Ida and Isaac to be significant to their respective seasons but Ida didn't do much in 2009. The I names are truly the one's to watch, year after year it deliver's something. Since 2008, the I storms have been notable.

Imelda is usually pronounced as "ih-MELL-duh" in English, accent on the second syllable. Though perhaps the Weather Bureau will want a more Spanish pronunciation for this where the first syllable would come out more like "ee".

I guess if you were old enough you'd know about Imelda Marcos and so remember how to pronounce it. There's also the English actress Imelda Staunton who received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination in 2004 for "Vera Drake" and also played Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films:

http://www.biography.com/#!/people/imel ... s-21062601

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001767/

It is rather unlucky for the Weather Bureau that they have had to retire so many "I" names. Of the letters in the first half of the alphabet which are more likely to get retired, "I" is the one with the fewest possible replacements if you limit yourself to names which would be readily recognizable. Ivy and Isabella are just about the only common female "I" names left that haven't been used, and of course the problem with Isabella is that Isabel has already been on the list. Although we do have Paulette and Paula both on the Atlantic lists at the moment, which aren't quite as close as Isabel and Isabella but are getting there. :)

I believe Imelda is also a famous name because of the former first lady of the Philippines.
