Gloria was bad, mainly bacause of the prolonged power outage, but my personal worst was a subtropical storm that hit Tampa in 1974 when I was visiting my grandparents. Their trailer home in Largo was flooded out, and we had to spend 3 days in a hotel lobby with about 300 other residents.

was the worst that I have ever experienced. Even with storm shutters, the wind was so strong that the sliding glass door in my living room shook and a 25 foot Australian pine fell on the roof.

I remember that 93 storm too. It ruined my birthday party as well. And Hurricane Frederic was a nightmare.

Hey Mattie, Yep I remember Hilda my first hurricane. We didn't have much damage in NO east where I lived, just some tree branches. Betsy thought took down a tree in our back yard, the street was flooded for days and we were without power for 2 weeks. I enjoyed the time off from school but hated making it up later in the school year.....MGC

andrew was the only hurricane experience I've had so far ,but after that don't want to be anywhere close to another.hurricanes like those affect people for a long time.11 years later people of south fl still speak in terms of "before andrew" or "after andrew".next time I hear hurricane warning I'm boarding up and running for cover

It's really a toss-up because the Blizzard of 1996 and the Superstorm of 1993 were REALLY BAD. Last year's President's Day blizzard that gave us two feet of snow wasn't a picnic either.
I guess mine were all winterstorms. I'll list them in order;
1) Blizzard of 96
2) Superstorm of 1993
3) Valentine's Day storm of 1983.
4) Snowstorm/blizzard 1978
5) President's Day blizzard 2003
6) Long Island Icestorm approximately 1971/1972.

As far as overall the worst storm, it had to be a March 21, 1974 tornado that badly damaged my family home here west of Atlanta (blew dad's station wagon into the back yard and collapsed portions of the west outside wall into our living room). Winds had to be 120 mph or higher...and it happened at 5:30 in the morning...in the dark :o :o
As far as tropical systems, I was in the eyewall of hurricane Frederic in NE Mobile, Alabama...and it was unbelievable (winds were gusting over 110 mph).

Camille was the worst I've been through. Frederick was nothing to take lightly either and we were on the "weak" side of him.
The super storm of '93 was a big surprise for us. We had about 9 inches of snow (measured it myself) and drifts that were incredible! Talk about a big spring break surprise!
