Jagno wrote:I live in S.W. La and one thing I can say from our last evacuation here is that Texas closed all of it's northbound routes to ITS TEXAS RESIDENTS ONLY all the way to Houston. If this looks like a massive evac for the south coast go north, not west into Texas. Alot of our residents ended up stranded on I-10 westbound when this occured. Some gas stations in Texas around the Beaumont area would not even let the Louisiana residents get gas, that too was for Texas residents only.

It's a shame to even think this, but most S.W. La. residents are hoping to repay the favor in a Texas time of need since they were so neighborly. The problem is.............we just aren't that type and when it came down to it we'd give them the shirt off of our backs to keep another human being warm.

It's nothing against you kind Texas folks here on this board. I have no doubt that you personally wouldn't do this but it was done and it did cause alot of hardship during our last evacuation.

I had no idea, what an awful thing to do...that is downright un-American.

Jagno, two things here. I do live in Houston and whether this did happen or not in Texas we have enough up and up reporters that would have taken it and run with it if it were happening(meaning then). I can promise you that. They love to be the first to get the "bad" stories. 2ndly, the last time there was an evacuation of the Western part of LA all of SE TX East of Houston was already evacuating also. To say the very least our roads were already jammed in all directions. Unless we literally closed the borders of the state and locked them shut with gates there is no way we could keep LA residents from coming across our borders and heading North on whatever route they chose. And lastly, until I see concrete proof other than your post-i.e. links, and/or personal stories of those who had these problems I have problems believing this happened
.
I will tell you first as a concerned person(much less a Texas resident)and as a moderator of this site that I do not think this was a very responsible post for the times we are in along the Gulf Coast right now.

Mike it was not my intention to hijack your thread here, I can't stand by and allow unsubstantiated possible rumors of this magnitude to go unanswered.

Louisiana, particularly in the SW Lafayette and Acadiana areas, are very receptive and friendly people. One of the reasons I dont totally hate the place. We probably would give the shirt off our backs if it would help evacuees.

Everyone should have that attitude...we should all do whatever we can to help others escape the path of a storm. I know after Georges...Louisiana and Mississippi finally settled their differences on storm evac procedures. There was some controversy there then but it's all cleared up....(I hope)

We're packing the important stuff this morning and I'm getting the shutters out of the shed. From there it is four hours to departure if necessary.

They started evac. deepwater rigs on sat. I also noticed a large amount of crewboat traffic and helo traffic sat. while i was fishing 10-15 miles south of Grand Isle. I would imagine that these evacs will go into high gear today.

My plans are in place but I have to work today.
Wish my boss would let us go home early. I am very concerned. I have 2 elderly parents I have to worry about.
While I do not think N.O. wil be the target, I can only say one thing: LIFE is more important than JOB. If you honestly feel the lives of your parents are at risk, call in sick or something, but take care of your irreplaceable resourse; your parents lives and your own.

My parents live 50 miles south of NOLA. They're closing their shudders today and either leaving today or tomorrow.
