Wow, this is really amazing. Just check out the size of Super Typhoon Winnie's eye! It's HUGE.

I just searched Winnie and this topic came up. But let me say this, Winnie's eye is so huge it's insane!!! I found some other pictures of him:



That's just 1 though. But that eye is just freaky!

They have recently updated their database with images dating back to 1974. For example, here is an (impressive) infrared satellite image of Frederic from 1979.

Cool. I didn't know Diana of 1990 was that large! It's like the size of Katrina. I wonder how far hurricane force winds extended in that one? TS Claudette of 1979 was large.

I've been cruising through that site a lot since late 2005, and I went crazy when they went back to 1974.

Here are some must see storms from 79 - 82.

1979 Hurricane Bob at landfall
1979 Gulf fish-spinner Henri
1979 Subtropical Hurricane
1980 Allen near Cuba
1980 Allen near Texas
1980 November category two Jeanne
1980 Karl putting Vince to shame.
1981 HUGE November subtropical storm
1982 Nor'easticane.
1982 High latitude category 4 Debby.

Those are all the good pre-83 ones I could find for now.

The 1979 Gulf fish-spinner Henri is a rare one. I believe the moisture from Henri and TD 20 led to the September 1979 Texas Flood, in which up to 27 inches of rain fell around Freeport. It came at a time, it was flooded from Claudette and Elena.
