Its not the cat 1's, 2's, and 3's that tend to weaken before landfall in the NGOM

its the 4's and 5's. I believe the water can support through a low end 3 in the NGOM, just not above

there was a storng ridge to the north of Ivan, albiet very small, that caused Ivans sudden westward turn around Jamaica. Still, the turn did not occur soon enough as the island was devastated

Hmmm...so you think it was coincidence that a micro-high suddenly turned it right around Jamaica where previously its track had no erratic turns? Quite possibly.

My Top Ten most interesting storms, in my lifetime:

1. 2004 Ivan (the sucker actually spilt in two after it's Panhandle landfall; one half into the Gulf other into North Atlantic, both causing problems)

2. 2001 Hurricane Michelle, TS Noel and a Nor'Easter (combined into a superstorm)

3. 1991 Grace and a Nor'Easter (combined into The Halloween/Perfect Storm of movie fame)

4. 2005 Wilma (the storm that didn't weaken over land, and lowest pressure yet recorded)

5. 2005 Katrina (The blockbuster)

6. 1999 Floyd (the monster rainmaker)

7. 1992 Andrew (small, but deadly)

8. 1995 Luis (record setting North Atlantic waves, and a hurricane until almost Greenland)

9. 1989 Hugo (SC cat 4, maybe even cat 5 hit, caused some wind damage even up here)

10. 1991 Bob (The last hurricane to directly effect New England, Maine and NB)

Wasn't there a storm that crossed the Florida peninsula (near central) and made a V-cut right in the GOM, and went right back to hit Florida again? Can't think of her name right now.

I was thinking Dora originally; but she cut across through Georgia, I'm thinking of one that crossed over into the Gulf, then cut right back... maybe the old memory is fading on this; but I'm almost certain a storm did something akin to that some years back.

I think storms like Kyle and Ginger are really interesting due to their longevity. Another interesting one to me was Felix in back in 1995. And of course backwards Lenny.

the ridge north of Ivan was there about 24 hours before it approached Jamaica.

The models just flat out missed it

Wasn't there a system a couple years ago that struck the east coast of South America in March or something? Somebody refresh my memory.

Catarina? That would be in the South Atlantic, but yes, certainly an interesting storm.

1985 Elena
She threatened our area twice as she made loops in the north Gulf. Then, when she finally made landfall in south MS, she spun off a tornado that hit my sister's in-laws' home all the way over here. It was the first time I'd seen tornado damage in person. Their roof was down the road about half a mile from their house, caught up in a bunch of pine trees! It was amazing and something I think about whenever a hurricane comes calling up here.

I remember Elena. I was 15, just got out of the hospital after having jaw surgery. It was a nightmare because she wouldn't leave no one alone.

Camille has to be the storm most fascinating to me. First hurricane I ever tracked as a 6yr old kid. Back in those days you had to get updates over your NWS radio, newspaper for Sat. Pics and the morning, noon and 5pm, 11pm news casts for loops, all black and white. It was the first real dangerous storm that I remember admiring as a kid the Hurricane Hunters flying into the storm. Been following them eer since.
