No worries on the mispelling of caribepr. Actually, it should be caribpr, as the Carib Indians were the origin of the word Caribbean, but by the time I knew that, it was too late...so spell it how ya wanna cuz I don car.

Here’s a suggestion: if you’re going to be typing a long message, pretype it in MS Word and then copy & paste it into your post. It usually catches the errors that you would skip or wouldn’t notice.

You know there is a Spellcheck functionality here but it seems to not work for me. (no, not correcting spelling but the tool just gives me a blank screen and does not check anything)

Your suggestion is well founded and I have done exactly what you suggested or have put the text in here, previewed it, copy and pasted into Word, edit/spell check and then pasted back here. Seems like a whole lot more steps my way, I guess!!

On a serious note, people should preview their posts to check for spelling and grammar and also; to make the final decision whether to post or not.

I am totally OCD when it comes to my spelling...if I see a typo or a misspelling I made in a post, I am compelled to edit it immediately, otherwise, it will drive me nuts...

For heaven's sake, PLEASE don't use "in" for "and". If you mean and, just type and!

There's only one member on this board who consistently types "in" for "and" (even though he's been corrected on this matter on several occasions by some of us). ____, If you are reading this post, STOP IT! Were it not for that, I would enjoy reading your very informative posts much more because it is clear to me that you are quite knowledgeable on meteorological matters.

Yeah, that's the main one that gets - or detracts from - my attention too.

IN = used to indicate motion or direction from outside to a point within or into -- as in "Let's go in the house".
AND = used to connect grammatically coordinate words, phrases, or clauses -- as in "pens and pencils".

Anyway, not sure what this thread has to do with the tropics, but I suppose someone will somehow make a connection...

I teach English, and I notice errors, toon However, my comment is about using the spell checker. It doesn't always work with homonyms. For example, if someone wants to use the word see and types in sea, the spell checker can't tell that the choice of words is wrong because see is a correctly-spelled word. ONe other warning--the grammar checker is terrible! Don't rely on it, either.

I make spelling errors all the time. I do not check my post for spelling 99.9 percent of the time. It's not that I don't care or am stupid. It's simply that I'm too busy and sometimes, quite frankly, in too lazy of a mood to let that stop me from posting. I am sorry if that offends anyone, but at least I'm honest about it. It won't change and if that lowers others views on what I am trying to post... honestly, that's ok with me.

As much as it probably bugs others that I'm this way, it bugs me just as much when others can't accept me for being who I am. A NON PERFECT person.

I don't like misspelled words or bad grammar either, but I'm also aware that puts me outside of mainstream thinking.

Even news headlines online have misspelled words. So do corporate brochures (and corporate recruitment e-mails have them in spades). Drive down any Main Street USA and you'll see reader boards outside businesses with misspelled words. Just this week I went to my favorite Mexican restaurant, and discovered they had printed up new menus, with "Appetizers" spelled wrong.

The people responsible for these mistakes are confident they will suffer no consequences, because no one wants to show the world what a nerd they are by pointing the mistake out.

I'll leave you with a paragraph from a recent news story about modern corporate culture:

I see the points of everyone here. And to be honest i am not a great at spelling as well, but the thing is that so many people come here to get a better understanding about weather, and whats going on. My worst fault is that i am a song writer and i do it for a living. There for like alot of other song witers we tend to write fast so we don't lose the lines coming to us in our heads. But i agree that there are alot of errors that are made here. If we all took just took a couple of seconds to fix them. Everyone would enjoy it much more. Some, new like i was see the errors and think it's ok they did it so i can. That makes it hard on everyone. This is a great site to enjoy and learn from. So if we all chip in it will only get better.

Here it is...the tropics, for the most part, have been quiet compared to the past several seasons...now as for speeling erroes, I make them all the time...just I usually read my post several times to weed them all uot...yet one or two will manage to slip thru...now as for the original subject of the thread (How to spell the word Q-U-I-E-T) you spell it like this: Q-U-I-E-T ...

No, you’re making it look harder than it seems. What I meant was to first type it up in MS Word and then copy & paste it over into your post, so you’re only copying once. After that, you can preview it, add codes, and decide whether or not you should post it, as you stated in that last part of your post.

Also, the misspelled word that I commonly see quite a lot is "A LOT."

And, in the midst of this rather crazy moment in the season, it's something we notice, something we are talking about and I have to say HOORAY, it's really civilized!!!! We're talking about something that doesn't really matter at all, in the context of what we are all here for, just something some of us notice

And by the way...there are some here that have English as a second language (as on another site I use a LOT...oh and by the way, it is a lot, not alot) and, as a terrible speaker of Spanish, who is blessed to live on an island that forgives me so very much, I want to make sure it is known that any lapses of English by non English speakers from any country....they type and speak English a hell of a lot better than I speak their language!!!
So...take it all with a grain of salt...is fujiwara a type of sushi?

It may sound a bit snobby but I cringe when I see Pro Mets with typos and bad grammar in their posts. I'm not talking about the "lingo" words that are spelled differently when weather jargon is used.

The errors I am talking about are obvious spelling and grammatical errors that I believe distract from what they are saying. This is their arena unlike us amatuers and I think they need to force themselves to a high standard.

I'm one of those.. ( My Spanish sucks too, btw, but I'm, getting there..)
Anyway, I know the difference between quite and quiet and know when to use which one of the two.

A spelling error which annoyes me big time is: "I should of known" (instead of: "I should have known")
