There is no hurricane conference in Orlando. The NHC has been alternating between New Orleans and Orlando in recent years. It was Orlando's turn this year but they went back to New Orleans for some reason. I'd much rather go to Orlando than New Orleans.

There is also the Texas Hurricane Conference at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island May 8-10:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/dem/pages/ ... erence.htm

And coincidentally, there's an AccuWeather Hurricane Summit at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, TX on May 8th. Dr. Gray, Phil Klotzbach, Joe Bastardi, and Eric Blake will be speaking (among others). It costs $99 for the all day event. I plan to attend, even though they're a competitor of ours. Always good to hear Dr. Gray speak.

Thank you wxman57 for the clarification about the no Orlando Conference this year. And added to the list the Texas Conference.

cyc, you can add:
May 8 - AccuWeather Hurricane Summit at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, TX

wxman57 posted it.

I'd also like to suggest removing the numbers in front of the dates. At first glance, it looks like you have the date before the month. No real big deal...I just thought it might look better. Plus, you don't have to change them each time you add something in the middle. :)

The Accuweather Summit has been added. That is a good suggestion and I took out the numbers. :)

Then go. You don't need a conference just to go to Orlando. Personally, I'd pick New Orleans over any other city in the country, but maybe that's just my hometown bias.

Hey, I'm from south LA, too. As far as I'm concerned, New Orleans was dirty, stinky, and dangerous before Katrina, but it's much worse now. Its only redeeming quality used to be its restaurants, and many of them are closed now.

Then you haven't been to New Orleans lately have you? Sure, the east side, 9th ward, Chalmette areas are much worse, HOWEVER, the parts that matter most....Downtown, French Quarter, Garden District, Uptown, etc. are cleaner than ever. Heck....downtown is pretty much spotless along Canal Street and down toward Harrah's.

And.....I'm not sure what restaurants you're talking about because every signature restaurant I can think of is open and booming more than ever.

I was in NO for Mardi Gras, along St. Charles. The crowds and atmosphere, besides a few stabs at the LRA, were back to normal. Sure some parts of the city are still recovering, but I felt safe. Sure there are parts of the city, as in any other large metropolitan area, including Houston, where you would not want to travel to. JazzFest should be a great time. Be sure to check the lineup as it is loaded with great music.

I was in New Orleans the week before last, speaking at the Underwater Intervention conference at the convention center. The hotel was a dump - I wouldn't walk around in my room without shoes, there was STILL no room service available, and the city was dirty and stinky as ever, if not more so. The convention posted a notice about being careful walking around ioutside. Many of the gang members who've been spending the last 18 months killing Texans are heading back to New Orleans. You can have them!

Your vision of New Orleans appears to be clouded by your proximity to the city.

"Sure some parts of the city are still recovering" That might be the understatement of the year.

See....this is the problem. False visions from people who have no idea of what they're talking about. What hotel did you stay in??? I'd stay in every single hotel downtown. The service is prestige anywhere you look. Before Katrina I wasn't much of a fan of NOLA, but since then, I have a totally different look. I would like to know exactly where you were and where you went. Everyone I talked to who came down for Mardi Gras were extremely impressed on how clean the city was.

LOL....Gang members. What, you think Houston won't have any gangs afterwards? Gangs are after gangs. Not ordinary people walking on the streets.

I talked with people from Omaha, Miami, and somewhere up in Wisconsin. They all had the same view I had.

Sorry if you don't like New Orleans much. Sorry if you think it's worst than ever.....blah blah blah. That's just the way some people see it, and not how reality shows it.

saying hi to everybody from here in Boca Raton, South Florida. Seems like every year we are in the cone for nearly every approaching CONUS storm.

I am hoping for a quiet, peaceful, fish year again - 2006 was great. :D

I think the chances are pretty good of us not getting hit then. It's Aug-Oct that worries me the most.

To think the season will be here so soon. I was really happy last year was slow. Not sure I could have gone through another like the 2005 season.

About New Orleans. I lived there 19 years and have only been back in MS for 3 years now. I am back there monthly and still own a home there. The uptown area looks good as does downtown, the quarter. I have no clue about Burbon since I avoid it--LOL. Chalmette and NO east are still really bad though. I did see some progress last month in New Orleans East.
There are many restraunts that I loved that are still closed. Forget the signature restraunts. I loved Charlie's steakhouse. Is it going to reopen? I doubt it. Dottie and her brother are too old to start over. Does any one know if Frankie and Johnnies is open? It is on Tchop. (SPELLING) St. I love their black eye peas and rice. I am going to be in town Wednesday and would like to eat there. :P :P

It is remarkable how fast the pace of this year has proceeded. Tax break week will soon be arriving in Florida in a few months. I'm planning to stock up on replenishing my bottled water source before June 1st and make numerous other tweaks and preparations to my system. Our tile roof was installed properly and performed very well in 2005 and 2006 with only some mild gaps opening between the tiles. Hopefully the gaps will be reinforced and refilled before the 2007 season starts but unfortunately this rests on the homeowner/landlord (we are renters and do not ultimately own our single-family ground-level residence). In addition, I'm proposing to push for final repairs for a small portion of damaged missing tile from flying debris during Wilma in 2005 before this season's activity picks up the pace. This brings me to a preparations question. Does anyone have any tips to file the landlord for repairs approval for the missing tile and small gaps between tiles that is approved by the Miami-Dade County codes?

With the exception of these repairs, the roofing is still highly durable and is well-installed and intact. My front is protected by accordion shutters but I'm unsure of their approval record and if the testing was approved by the Florida code or the Miami-Dade County code. The sides and back have sturdy Bahamas-style shutters (I believe they are Bahamas shutters based on their general design) that are closed down and anchored by screw pilings into the walls. I'm insecure about the porch design (and the screening which tears repeatedly every few months). We've tried various types of screening but it breaks on a consistent basis. Does anyone have any tips for solving this problem?

This might be a good thread to discuss preparations. In addition, can the dates for the Florida tax break week coming in a few months be added to the list? Thanks!

Good post.First, when will tax break week be? Second,storm2k has a forum for hurricane preparations

http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=30

where all the members can go and post about those very important themes. Not to discourage anyone to post about it in this thread, but since there is a forum for that, maybe is better to post all about preparations at that forum.

I decided to post it here because I thought it would be more visible to members and other users. In addition, the issues are intertwined with the discussions and subjects of this thread and the timeline leading to the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

I just recalled that the tax break in Florida runs from May 21st to June 1st. Can the dates now be added to the list for this event?

It is already spring Luis, starts on the 1st March not the 20th. Well certainly meteorology wise with this being a weather board of course. :D

When is the WMO meeting? That will tell us if any names are retired (I doubt there will be any) from 2006...
