if the shear is not over Hawaii, it is not impossible for this to hit as a hurricane

In 1993, fernanda rapidly intensified east of the Big Island. Dora in 1999 did the same just south of the island. Also,the last Daniel also underwent a period of RI NE of the Big Island

Derek, if you're responding to my post, I was only basing what I said on the official forecast. I would not even attempt to predict what anything would hit as, since I'm nowhere close to qualified.

hits the islands more than the oceans and so there is a source of displacement current at the islands. Any banding coming close will have a tendency to increase this, and provide a nearby displacement current--to intensify the storm and direct it toward the islands.
