Even in cat 4s and 5s, the major hurricane winds do not affect people that far inland. It would be over land for about 2-3 hours from landfall to arrivial in Houston, which should weaken the storm by 1-2 categories.

That said, cat 2 winds will devastate a city, or even cat 1 as I saw first hand last October

I agree. Very true though some think otherwise. Houston is inland 50 miles or so from Galveston. The smaller cities in-between would take the brunt of surge and wind. Un-luckly, I live next to hobby airport which is 40 miles inland.

Wait. We're talking about Tropical Cyclone Reports, not the same hypotheticals that didn't happen that seem to come up in every single thread here...come on, I'm sure there's a "what if a major hurricane hit a major city?" thread somewhere on the front page...

It's just kind of irritating because I always feel inclined to reply to the last post on the thread, only to find out it has nothing to do with why I opened the thread in the first place.

Why save Beta for last? I was kind of expecting Franklin to sign off with his namesake storm last.

Yes Andrew92 and they released one from the EPAC too.The report left is one that you haved been waiting,Hurricane Beta right?

Yes I am waiting for that one. However, now with a newly-discovered storm, there will be a report for that one surely. So now there are two reports waiting because of that, right?

In any event, Beta I cannot wait to read!

I'm just wondering what kind of damage there was in Nicaragua because unless I wasn't paying much attention (quite possible), I didn't hear of much damage. This is also interesting because I have a friend who will be in Nicaragua until around the end of this year.

I have news for you, Hobby isn't 40 miles inland, it's closer to 15 miles inland. It's about 15 miles from Galveston Bay to the east. To the south, the Gulf is 30 miles away. That's not very far! If a Cat 3 came up over central Galveston Island, just west of Texas City and over League City, you'd be in the eyewall and there wouldn't necessarily be too much weakening 15 miles west of Galveston Bay.

exactly Derek if it goes through Galveston Bay where all the refernies are there won't be much weakening its a matter on which side of I-45 the eye goes.my house is off exit 197 on I-45.about 30 minutes west .the Texas members should know that is the town of Farfield right before you get to Corsicana.

I sort of doubt that the Beta report will be released this week...a good portion of NHC will likely be at the Hurricane Conference in Mobile (in cycloneye's list of events).

well that Rita report confirms what I was saying a while back. It says that most areas saw Cat. 1 force winds and that only a "few" areas saw Cat. 2 force winds. It also says that all Cat. 3 force winds were located in a very small pocket east of the eye and right along the coast (meaning that Texas was spared from the major hurricane force winds).

Also, if you take a look at that map...Houston is MUCH closer to the coast than 50 miles if the storm was to make landfall along Galveston bay and then move WNW. It looks as though Houston is only 20-25 miles inland in that kind of strike.

Actually that would be 32.2 miles.... :D I was projecting a Freeport landfall but anyway I was off by 7.8 miles as far as Hobby goes. DT is a little farther from that. Sorry for the inaccuracy. If that track held true, I would be in the western eye wall which is a lot better than the east.

Alicia was a weak cat 3 and I know I was in the east eyewall with her however she weakened a lot before it got to Pasadena. I guess it depends on the storm......

Beta should be out this week.. and as far as the possible unnamed STS... I would give that one a few weeks. I think I heard that NHC wanted to have every official system done by the National Hurricane Conference in April
