The big question is if after the Beta report is up will they issue a report on the unamed system.

I got this:

Dear Sandy,

You are welcome.

If it is decided to add another system to the season total, we will make this information public via our web page. You might want to periodically check there for updates, although I do not expect a final decision for at least a couple of weeks.

Best regards,

James

First, thanks for all the information you have been providing. Now, no decision yet on the unnamed storm?

The good thing is that when you ask, they answer!

2005 is the season that never ends. Even Zeta was not the last storm. Apparently 2005 can never fail to satisfy.

Well, techinically it was the last storm. Considering it moved into 2006 there is no way it couldn't have been.

We're questioning a storm before Zeta that formed.

Im outraged over downing Rita to 115. SHould have stayed 120mph as the damage I saw looks pretty bad.

again, damage is not factored into the landfall intensity, only the scientific data is

Your right to a extent as building structure plays a factor too. I like to go by tree and plant damage to acess intensity. However in Katrina some of the forest damage looked more than 125mph.

I agree Katrina was more like 125 to 130 at landfall. Like where do they get the data to support it being less then a cat3? While at the same time the whole coast is gone with out measuring things to mesure the winds. No proof whats so ever.

Katrina WAS 125 mph at landfall.

Andrew great minds think alike. The report just came out and I was going to post the announcement but you did it first. :) How is the report in your view about what you were expecting? As promised it's a sticky again.

Now the question is if they will issue a report on the unamed system.

I am very shocked and overjoyed that, even after re-analysis, no one was killed by Hurricane Beta. This is a miracle, considering it hit a poor country and was a Category 2 hurricane (usually a very deadly combination). I was hoping to hear a little more about the damage, but hazarding a guess, if Beta was really assigned a person's name (for instance, had been named Tammy instead), I don't think it would have been retired.

I'm glad after reading this, my friend who is and will be in Nicaragua until the end of December made it through OK (even though I did hear from her once since the hurricane).

Lastly, I believe there will be a report on the new system. I think I remember reading that somewhere. I don't remember where exactly though, because I've been so busy with school lately.

It only takes 75-80mph winds for blowdown (check out the many derechos in the upper midwest). 75-90mph winds in a notable derecho downed around half a million trees in the Mpls-St Paul area. Same thing occured with Wilma; exacerbated with saturated or loose soil (sandy, in the case of FL, peat on top of rock in the BWCA of MN). Also slash pine in the south will go down in about 70-75mph winds and snap off at about 10 feet up; in one afternoon at Waveland I took three separate photos of this type of occurance, which would have been prior to surge inundation; the highest winds come after the surge.
