With the John Hope/Lyons debate, you could compare it to Harry Kalas or Vin Scully. The guy who takes their place might know as much or more about baseball, but will never be seen as better because they are legends. John Hope was a legend.

While it is indisputable that Steve Lyons is knowledgable and well respected in his field, I agree with others that John Hope easily bests him as being an on-air meteorologist. For me his delivery left much to be desired, coming off sometimes as too glib. He would spend precious minutes of the Tropical Update on history (although admittedly sometimes these were interesting, it would have been nice for him to actually try to prepare graphics) and breeze by the actual day's development potential, only stating that vacation weather in the Carribean and Mexican Riviera was good. During storm situations, I think that he could try to translate his knowledge better into layman's term, something that took Greg Forbes a while but I think he mastered while Lyons never really got comfortable. The forays into surfing always felt like distractions. The question is how much of the coverage is truly under Lyons' control and how much was ordained from the PTB; for all I know, perhaps Lyons wanted to focus more on the storm but his superiors forced more infotainment into his presentations. In any event, I wish him the best of luck in TX. Bring on Knabb.

Of course you understand that's mostly scripted so outside of a breaking weather story the topic was usually not up to him...

I heard him say similar things - on Weekend Edition, when the focus is on weather for vacationers, golfers, surfers, etc., so again it's usually not up to the OCM's (similar to DJ's and a radio stations "play" list), and if the tropics were slow (if there was nothing more than a weakening TD in the Eastern Pacific heading out to sea), he'd probably end up talking about the things you mentioned...

It really is similar. John Hope was the voice that started my fascination. And I stand to this day that he was the best On Camera Met I've ever seen.

Steve Lyons, great guy, has the credentials to be NHC director, but to many he was just John Hopes replacement.

John Hope was the best, but Dr. Lyons had his moments as well. He stayed pretty much on-air during that entire Sunday night and Monday morning when Katrina made landfall.

Knapp will do fine. Seems very knowledgeable as well.

What's needed is more time for the tropical updates ... as a viewer I'm frustrated, so the on-air Tropical specialist must be as well. Instead ... it's time for "Storm Stories" or a movie. Yes, I admit I still do watch TWC, but since NBC bought the company, it's headed south in a hurry. It won't be Knapp's fault. He'll do fine. Overall, I thought Dr. Lyons did pretty well with the little time given him for his segments.

I was Knabb a few days ago on the TWC. He wasn't given much to do at that time, just stand in front of a screen showing the Caribbean on satellite and agree with everything the anchorperson was talking about.

John Hope and Dr. Lyons did more to educate the public on TWC than most of the MSM outlets combined. Thankfully, they were not able to get our local met Paul Delgado who is one of the best in Florida, IMHO.

The crew we have in the Tampa and Miami areas are some of the best local mets during hurricane season, IMHO.

Thank you, Roy Leep, for that :-)
