This is partially due to the "apples and oranges" effect of modern satellite technology. Many storms are named nowadays that wouldn't have been named (or even detected) prior to the last 25 years or so.
As for the topic at hand, it seems like many posters feel somehow betrayed that they haven't gotten a 2005-esque season so far based on the predictions of a hyperactive season. When I see these posts, I have to stifle the urge to channel Russell Crowe from Gladiator: "Are you not entertained?". The time to declare these forecasts a bust will be in late October when the climatological lid starts shutting. It's like seeing a heavily favored football team down 10 points in the first quarter and declaring the game over.
