Seems like it was just yesterday that we were still on the 100 day mark for the 2006 season. Hard to believe we are already to the 83 day mark for the 2007 season now!

With the 2007 hurricane season approaching its time to start thinking about preparations. The GOM was very fortunate last year. We all needed a break. I am not ready for another active season. Watching TC George pound Pt Hedland, Austrailia the last 24 hours has reminded me of Rita's scare. For many along the Gulf Coast the 2005 season it was beyond expression. Tonight I researched extreme Austrailian cyclones and came across a very scary satellite image that I hope no of us experience directly.

If you are those that never experienced a hurricane and you moved to a prone area, or you have forgoten here are supplies you should have the following:

This might be a good time to get hammer nail, wood or shutters for windows. Since the the whole state isn't tackling for it right now

non perishable food, you may lose power if you decide to stay in the storm: make sure you don't shop at the last minute, do it no less than 4 days in advance if you must wait. Items tend to be sold quickly near evacuation time.

maps: you don't want to get lost while evacuating, you might be heading to the storm then running away from it.

HAVE CASH! : things get chaotic where they won't take credit or checks so have cash on you.

Water at least 1 gallon/person, bateries, flaslights, and batery operating radio for weather statements.

Gas: fill up as soon as you can, stations do run out of gas once everybody fills up at the same time. I believe it is illegal to have gas in your trunk, plz let me know if this is true.

During Evacuations: note that all highways are like parking lots, so dont think it is not normal during evacuation, so dont waste gas going back and forth between highways. where it takes 30 mins to get to certain location could take 2hours, or more. Hotels also fill up once you have reached the safe zone, it could be another 10-200 miles before you reach an open hotel, so prepare to sleep in the car, I know it's not the best way to get sleep, i've done it before.

When your'e threaten: If it's a tropical storm to Category2 storm, it's up to you whether you should evacuate or not, if you think your house can handle it then stay, if your'e not sure or u dont think it will hold, then leave it is not worth the risk to have you or your family get injured or killed in the storm. If the hurricane is Category 3 or higher that's the flag to evacuate, there should be question about it whether to stay or leave, the answer is leave. IMHO

If there is anything I have forgotten you are welcome to reply or send a sticky post.

Time to take Stock in your Neighbors

#78 Postby TreasureIslandFLGal » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:29 am

Now is the time to get to know your neighbors and see who may need help in the event of an approaching storm. The elderly or handicapped are especially at risk, especially if family members do not live close by and/or they don't drive.

Find out now if you have neighbors who plan to stay or leave during storms. If people are staying, its good to know who is around you so you can work together before and after a storm hits.

Wow down to 81 days now. I remember when it was 81 days before 2005 season and I was getting excited. It's coming fast.
