Translated press release now they have upgraded to red alert.

COMMUNICATE OF PRESS

Date: 24/02/07 to 6 p.m.

Subject: Tropical cyclone “GAMEDE”

Text: Tropical cyclone “GAMEDE” continuous to approach the Reunion and the threat represented by this system are confirmed. The red alert consequently is issued for 21h this Saturday February 24.

GAMEDE were centred with 16h local to 315 km with the north-north-east of the department. It is from now on a mature tropical cyclone, with an eye approximately 50 km in diameter, which still gained in intensity this Saturday, approaching the threshold the stage of tropical cyclone intense.

The other evolution of importance, is the inflection of trajectory occurred this day. The displacement very established in direction of the west-south-west since yesterday, indeed changed with a change of south-western course. This inflection of trajectory is obviously not an element favourable for the Reunion, since it means that the centre of the meteor will approach more the island initially discounted.

One considers from now on a passage closest to the centre of the cyclone at the beginning of day to this Sunday, off the north-western coast, a priori at a distance higher than 100 km. If this trajectory envisaged were checked, that would mean that the department that would not be effleuré by the zone of winds more the violent ones present in the middle of the cyclone. A passage at a more brought closer distance cannot however be completely excluded at this hour and the degree of degradation of the weather conditions will be of course dependent on the final trajectory of GAMEDE.

But in any event, of the cyclonic conditions (i.e. gusts higher than 150 km/h) are from now on almost inevitable. The winds of south-east in east will turn to the North-East tomorrow morning, and will penetrate then in the north-western area until protected there. It is in this area that the strongest winds will then be awaited, with gusts exceeding 150 km/h on the littoral, of the higher values occurring in the most exposed Tops, such as those of Saint-Paul or of the Possession, like in sectors such as the Plain of the Kaffirs, all zones where the gusts will be able to border 200 km/h.

The rains will be strong by accumulation on the whole Tops, and more only on the solid mass of the volcano, more sprinkled until now. The coastal zones will of course not be saved, even if the quantities of rain are definitely less.

The sea will be obviously dismounted on the major part of the littoral, to start with the coasts north and is where the large cyclonic swell generated by GAMEDE breaks.

The conditions will remain very degraded all the day of Sunday, because even when the centre of GAMEDE starts to move away, the conditions will not improve quickly.

The actual text is as follows.

COMMUNIQUE DE PRESSE

Date : 24/02/07 à 18 heures locales.

Objet : Cyclone tropical "GAMEDE"

Météo-France public bulletin for Réunion issued at 09:39 CET (presumably)

Bulletin émis le dimanche 25 février 2007 à 09h39

La Réunion: Alerte cyclonique ROUGE

TEXTE : LE CENTRE DU CYCLONE TROPICAL "GAMEDE" A COMMENCE DE
S'ELOIGNER DE LA REUNION.
L'ILE DEMEURE MALGRE TOUT DANS LA ZONE D'INFLUENCE DU PHENOMENE ET VA LE RESTER ENCORE PENDANT LES JOURS A VENIR, DU FAIT DE LA GRANDE EXTENSION DE CE METEORE.
EN CONSEQUENCE, SI DE REELLES CONDITION SCYCLONIQUES NE SONT PLUS D'ACTUALITE ET QUE LES CONDITIONS LES PLUS DEGRADEES SONT DESORMAIS DERRIERE NOUS, LA MAJEURE PARTIE DE L'ILE VA TOUTEFOIS RESTER SOUMISE A DU TRES MAUVAIS TEMPS CE DIMANCHE, AVEC VENTS FORTS, FORTES PLUIES DANS LES HAUTS ET GRANDE HOULE DE SECTEUR NORD SUR LES COTES NORD, EST ET NORD-OUEST.
LA PLUS GRANDE PRUDENCE RESTE DONC DE MISE.
APRES AVOIR SUIVI UNE TRAJECTOIRE MENACANTE POUR LA REUNION EN PREMIERE PARTIE DE NUIT, LE CYCLONE "GAMEDE" A REDRESSE SA TRAJECTOIRE VERS L'OUEST-NORD-OUEST EN DEBUT DE JOURNEE.
LE CENTRE DU METEORE EST AINSI PASSE AU PLUS PRES DE LA REUNION EN DEUXIEME PARTIE DE NUIT, A UN PEU PLUS DE 200 KM AU NORD ; LE CENTRE DE "GAMEDE" COMMENCE A S'ELOIGNER PROGRESSIVEMENT.
LE VENT VA RESTER ORIENTE A L'EST-NORD-EST, LES SECTEURS LES PLUS EXPOSES SONT DONC LES COTES NORD ET NORD-OUEST, DU PORT A STE SUZANNE, ET LE FLANC SUD DU VOLCAN JUSQU'A ST PIERRE ; SUR CES ZONES LES VENTS SERONT EN ATTENUATION LENTE, MAIS LES RAFALES DEPASSERONT ENCORE LES 100 KM/H SUR LE LITTORAL. LE LITTORAL OUEST DE ST LEU A ST PAUL, RESTE POUR LE MOMENT A L'ECART DE CES VENTS FORTS. SUR LES HAUTS DE L'ILE, LES BOURRASQUES DE VENT VONT ENCORE AVOISINER LOCALEMENT LES 150 KM/H EN POINTE.
COMPTE-TENU DE L'EXTENSION DE "GAMEDE", LES PLUIES VONT EGALEMENTPERDURER TOUT AU LONG DE LA JOURNEE, ELLES GARDENT UN CARACTERE IRREGULIER SUR LES ZONES LITTORALES, MAIS LES HAUTS RESTENT LARGEMENT ARROSES AVEC DES CUMULS GLOBALEMENT IMPORTANTS.
EN RAISON DE CES FORTES PLUIES SUR LE RELIEF, LA PLUPART DES RAVINES SONT EN CRUES SUR L'ENSEMBLE DU DEPARTEMENT AVEC DE NOMBREUX RADIERS SUBMERGES.
LA MER RESTE GROSSE, LA HOULE CYCLONIQUE DE SECTEUR NORD DEPASSE LES 5 METRES EN HAUTEUR MOYENNE SUR LE LITTORAL DE LA MOITIE NORD DU DEPARTEMENT.
AU COURS DE LA NUIT PROCHAINE, LE RALENTISSEMENT DU VENT DEVRAIT SE CONFIRMER PROGRESSIVEMENT ; EN REVANCHE, LA PLUIE EST PREVUE PERDURER TOUT AU LONG DE LA NUIT ET PAR ACCUMULATION, LES HAUTEURS DE PLUIE SERONT IMPORTANTES SUR UNE LARGE MOITIE NORD DU DEPARTEMENT.=

Rough translation through Google:

La Réunion: Cyclone red alert

THE CENTER OF TROPICAL CYCLONE “GAMEDE” A STARTS
TO MOVE AWAY FROM LA REUNION.
The ISLAND REMAINS DESPITE EVERYTHING IN the ZONE Of INFLUENCE OF the PHENOMENON AND WILL STILL REMAIN IT DURING the DAYS TO BE COME, BECAUSE OF GREAT EXTENSION OF THE METEOR.
Consequently, IF REAL CONDITION SCYCLONIQUES ARE NOT ANY MORE TOPICALITY AND THAT the CONDITIONS MORE the DEGRADEES ARE FROM NOW ON BEHIND US, the MAJOR PART OF the ISLAND HOWEVER WILL REMAIN SUBJECTED A OF VERY BAD WEATHER EC SUNDAY, WITH STRONG WINDS, STRONG RAINS IN the TOPS AND LARGE SWELL OF NORTHERN SECTOR ON the DIMENSIONS NORTH, IS AND NORTH-WESTERN.
THE GREATEST PRUDENCE THUS REMAINS OF SETTING.
AFTER FOLLOWHAVING FOLLOWED a TRAJECTORY MENACANTE FOR LA REUNION IN FIRST PART OF NIGHT, CYCLONE “GAMEDE” A RECTIFIES SA TRAJECTORY TOWARDS the WEST-NORTH-WEST AT THE BEGINNING OF DAY.
THE CENTER OF THE METEOR EAST THUS MASTER KEY WITH MORE CLOSE TO LA REUNION IN SECOND PART OF NIGHT, A A LITTLE MORE THAN 200 KM IN NORTH; The CENTER OF “GAMEDE” BEGINS A TO MOVE AWAY GRADUALLY.
The WIND WILL REMAIN DIRECTS A the EAST-NORTH-EAST, the SECTORS MORE EXPOSE ARE THUS the DIMENSIONS NORTH AND the NORTH-WEST, OF PORT OF ST. SUZANNE, AND SIDE SOUTH OF the VOLCANO UNTIL ST PIERRE; ON THESE ZONES THE WINDS WILL BE IN SLOW ATTENUATION, BUT THE GUSTS WILL STILL EXCEED 100 KM/H ON THE LITTORAL. The WESTERN LITTORAL OF ST LEU TO ST PAUL, REMAINS FOR THE MOMENT A the VARIATION OF THESE STRONG WINDS. ON THE TOPS OF THE ISLAND, THE GUSTS OF WIND OF WIND STILL LOCALLY WILL BORDER 150 KM/H AT A PEAK.
TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE EXTENSION OF “GAMEDE”, THE RAINS GO EGALEMENTPERDURER THROUGHOUT THE DAY, THEY KEEP AN IRREGULAR CHARACTER ON THE LITTORAL ZONES, BUT THE TOPS LARGELY REMAIN SPRINKLE WITH OVERALL IMPORTANT OFFICE PLURALITIES.
BECAUSE OF THESE STRONG RAINS ON the RELIEF, the MAJORITY OF the GULLIES ARE INTO RAW ON the WHOLE OF the DEPARTMENT WITH MANY FOUNDATION RAFTS SUBMERGE.
THE SEA REMAINS LARGE, THE CYCLONIC SWELL OF NORTHERN SECTOR EXCEEDS THE 5 METERS IN AVERAGE HEIGHT ON THE LITTORAL OF THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE DEPARTMENT.
DURING THE NEXT NIGHT, THE DECELERATION OF THE WIND SHOULD SE CONFIRM GRADUALLY; ON THE OTHER HAND, THE RAIN EAST ENVISAGED PERDURER THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AND BY ACCUMULATION, THE HEIGHTS OF RAIN WILL BE IMPORTANT ON A BROAD NORTHERN HALF OF THE DEPARTEMENT.=

Been a little wet then I see. Up to 832mm in the interior of Reunion in last 24 hours. The highest recorded gust on the island is 148km/h.

That's impressive considering that only the exterior rainbands have been affecting the island. It could have been much worse if the core of the storm have been over the island.

It looks better then ever right now. It's eye is clear and it's organized. If I had to guess the strength of Gamede it would be 125 knots (1-min). The following reasons for that is; the rainbands are very organized with only a hint of dry air, the eye is clear and round, and enough deep convection. The only reasons why this is not a category 5 cyclone is the convection is not deep enough overall and the dry air would have to be non-existent. I doubt this is still 105 knots (1 min winds).

This is one of if not the largest tropical cyclone I have seen in 2 years of watching this basin. Most of the time the strong cyclones are small in the south Indian ocean.

It's kind of surprising to see a tropical system this organized at this time of year... kind of gets you out of the winter time blues LOL

Red alert has been discontinued for Réunion. The post-cyclone "phase de prudence" is now in effect. Danger is now isolated but remains a possibility.
