im not exactly sure myself but this might help some:
its a very strong current that is shaped like a loop in the GOM and florida straight and goes up towards Cape Hatteras, NC that superheats the water in the area and can cause a hurricane to explode in energy

the loop current is part of the gulf stream., and comes up between the yucatan penn. and cuba. Since the deepest areas of warm water in the GOM are the loop current or eddys. they are ofted the cause for a strengthing hurricane. While the loop current seems to be further north in the summer, thats not always the case. Related to the loop current, are eddys that break off to form in various water depths in the GOM. One large eddy is the eddy vortex. I have been studing the loop current all winter . Fun stuff. :D

Did that help at all? Seriously, the complexity of all of the weather patterns are so fasinating! Makes you understand everything how everything works together to make our weather..Nothing about it, is by chance. 8-) 8-)

Eddys break off from the loop current to form their own deep areas of warm water. They are also called anticlyclones, but i dont want to confuse you more. Its quite simple to understand if you realize how gulf and ocean currents work.

yes , eddys are warm, deep water. The eddy vortex is the largest eddy and sits south of N.O.

So those are what fueled Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma to become cat-5s? Right?
