Tkanks a lot glad to see that Jasonsbut why do you appreciate it?
Thanks for asking![]()
I was born in Tampa, Florida and lived there until I was 10 years old. It's not 100% tropical, but it was tropical enough for me to enjoy the fresh fruit from the many roadside fruit stands. This included citrus, mangos, papayas, strawberries (especially in February at stawberry festival time), bananas, etc. Coconuts came from a bit further south or were just imported. Too bad many of them have closed over the years, but the fruit from the roadside was the best.
Anyway, I moved to Texas with my mother and my Father stayed in Florida. I went back to visit every summer and loved the beach and the daily afternoon thunderstorms. For those few months, I felt like I was in a tropical paradise. I didn't really appreciate it until I was gone. I missed the sand, the water, the sea breeze, Roy Leep (weatherman), and Q105 (radio station).![]()
My Dad moved to Big Pine Key in about 1997 (a couple of years in Key West) and when I go down to visit, I don't want to leave. So, since then, I've had a love for tropical places, especially the Caribbean islands. I've been to Jamaica & Grand Cayman and hope to see many more...I'm also a bit of a palm tree buff and I participate on a palm forum online. I have a backyard full of zone 10 plants but I'm in zone 8/9.
So, I am enjoying this thread because it mentions those things, and it gives me a glimpse of life in the tropics. It's just been overall, very enjoyable for me to read about your perspective down there in paradise.
OK , waouw i'm amazed by your excellent reply, i understand right now your pleasure!

Re: Abundance of fruits meaning a sign of an approaching cane?
What is left of the pecan trees in my backyard are loaded with pecans. One of the trees is nearly dead the other two are in bad shape. I was hoping they would recover but the beating they took during Katrina was aparently too much for them to recover from. Where the limbs were ripped off by Katrina's winds rot has set in. They are likely to get chained sawed this winter. Have not decieded what type of tree to replace them with......MGC

As long as La Soufrière behaves.
Joe Bastardi (I know, I know) has referenced apparent Texas lore about an insect (I wonder if they are the really skinny brown praying mantis I see sometimes) called a "Texas Walking Stick", that if fatter than usual, is an indication of an increased risk of a Texas hurricane.
I guess the science behind that is that if the upper pattern favors deep Easterly flow into Texas in the Summer, it also favors bringing in something from the tropics. The 'walking sticks' are fat because more rain means more food (not sure if they are insectivores or herbivores), and a rainy pattern signals a hurricane prone pattern.
With the death ridge parked over Texas, the walking sticks are not as well fed, it isn't raining much.
Maybe an abundance of fruit in the Deep Tropics means the same thing, that repetitive passages of strong tropical waves bringiung lots of rain is a signal that later in the season the pattern will be favorable for tropical cyclones.
OK, checked the interweb, a Texas Walking Stick from the Texas A&M University on line insect guide

Interesting you bring this up....
I used to see walking sticks in Florida when I was a kid. They were skinny - like a stick
Well, just a few days ago, after being here now 21 years, I saw my first "Texas" walking stick. It was more like your picture, but with an even fatter body. The body was so large I almost couldn't belive it was a walking stick. It also had a smaller baby walking stick on it, so it must have been a mother.

Last year the citrus trees were loaded with fruit but no hurricane. Fay had a track towards us but didn't deliver any winds.
This year the trees are sparse.

I spent an evening drinking in Montreal, Quebec back in 1984 when I was stationed at NNPTU Ballston Spa, NY.
I don't speak French (my wife does, 4 years of high school and 3 years of college French got her a part time job during college with Air France as they had a Paris-Houston-Mexico city flight, and not only did my wife get to take her mother to Paris non-rev, they code shared with Cayman, and she went to the Caymans).
I can speak very nasally and eat all the consonants at the end of words and sound French, but it isn't really French.
