Most impressive storm of 2007

#1 Postby Squarethecircle » Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:12 pm

I've gone through the past few pages and I'm surprised that no one has done one of these yet (at least, not one that was conducted after 2007 was actually over).

So, what do you think was the most impressive storm of 2007?

Erin for its intensification over land (shows what perfect upper level support can do for any low pressure system)

Dean for its prolonged major hurricane status

Felix for its RI

Strictly tropics? How about US non-tropics. Global non-tropics?

:uarrow: All tropical cyclones forming in the year of 2007. Ever.

For me its either between Felix or Gonu, Felix for the amazing RI and landfalling cat-5 and Gonu just because of the power in an area that rarely sees a system yet alone one so powerful.

Dean would be a fairly close 3rd.

Looking through the list, I'm going to have to go with Gonu. The fact that it did so much damage was just as insane as the storm itself.

I liked Hurricane Dean and Cyclone Gonu. There were a lot of impressive storms that year (Erin, Felix, Humberto, Lorenzo, Sidr).

Hehe, seems like Dean and Gonu are the big picks here. I'd also consider Sidr; I estimate the pressure maybe even lower than Dean, although most likely a bit higher. But Gonu looked more impressive (and was, overall) regardless.

Sepat, Sidr, Gonu, Dean, Felix, Flossie...

Gotta go with Felix.

1. Gonu (a cat 5 in the Arabian Sea!)
2. Felix (amazing intensification)
3. Sidr (caused the most tension of any storm this season)
4. Dean (cat 5 landfall)
5. Flossie (the spotlight of a dull year for the EPac)

Flossie was really meh to me. Seemed kind of irrelevant. But it was really unexpected.

My picks:

1) Cyclone Dora (SWIO), very compact annular cyclone, a relative rarity in the SHEM (Hondo notwithstanding)
2) Cyclone Gaméde (SWIO), very large cyclone that caused world record rainfalls
3) Cyclone Gonu (NIO), not much else I can say that hasn't been said
4) Hurricane Felix (ATL)
5) Typhoon Sepat (WPAC), some of the deepest convection I've seen in a long time
6) Hurricane Flossie (EPAC), maintained its intensity for a very long time over only marginal SSTs (25-26C, passed over an eddy of 24C without weakening) and heat content
7) Cyclone Sidr (NIO), not much else to say

Humberto....from a depression to a strong Cat-1 hurricane in 19 hours while just offshore of Texas. I expect the deep tropics to produce Cat-5 hurricanes so while Felix and Dean were impressive hurricanes it is nothing unusual to have a Cat-5 in the WCarb Sea......MGC

Let see. Not in any order.
Sidr-Very intense storm and could of been much worse, like in 1970 and 1991. Deadliest tropical cyclone for this century.
Gonu-Category 5 in the Arabian Sea. A rarity.
Dean-Cateogory 5 hurricane at a low latitude.
Felix-Rapid intensifcation.
Humberto-Strengthened from a disturbance to hurricane in 24 hours.
Cyclone Gaméde-Huge rainmaker. Makes Allison and Claudette look like drizzle.

To add some extra emphasis to this for those who aren't familiar, Gaméde produced 4869 mm of rain - 191.7 inches - on Réunion in just a 96-hour period! 1625 mm (about 64 inches) of that rain fell in 24 hours. It broke world rainfall records for 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, 8-, and 9-day periods due to its large size.

I wasn't there to see Dora, unfortunately. By the time I had gotten interested, its remnants were fizzling out.

For me it would probably have to be Hurricane Flossie.

Especially since I was on the Big Island when Flossie was approaching Hawaii.

But otherwise I would probably have to say Humberto due to rapid intensification. Probably was the most interesting storm of the year.

:uarrow: Hehe, Humberto was fun if you like that kind of thing. 2007 was a year for individual storms.

And welcome to the Storm2k fun place (though by your register date you've been lurking for a while...).

Talk about a lot of rain! 64 inches is the total from Wilma in Mexico. Reunion Island gets a lot of rain because of the terrain.

There were only 4 real blockbusters in 2007: Dean, Felix, Gonu and Sidr - all of which (I believe) had 150 kt winds (I think Gonu and Sidr were both 150 kt storms at their peak intensity). Cat 5's in the WPAC are not exceptional, and the EPAC was fairly quiet.
