Last year there was a 30 day period without any tropical cyclones forming worldwide during sometime in the Spring. This is nothing.

I thought this was kind of an odd topic for March, until I realized you meant worldwide. :P

It looks like you're right. Tropical Cyclone Cliff, an SPAC storm, ended on April 6th. The next tropical, nameable, >35kt storm was Cyclonic Storm Akash in the NIO on May 14th.

Well, IIRC, the Northern Hemisphere basins whhere TCs form are larger than the Southern Hemisphere basins, I think.

I should probably looks that up. But if I do remember right, mid-March would be quieter than mid-September.

Looks interesting, but nothing should be expected. The Sahara getting some rain!!

Even more interesting, look at the plume of dust being picked up by the storm and transported northward.

Hey Hurakan.

That's a great image, that dust was really being dragged northwards!

ECMWF model has been hinting for the last 4 or 5 runs now at development of a TC in the Wpac. It takes a low pressure area over the Philippines and develops it into a TC in the South China Sea in about 168 hours. A very long way off I know but it's the first time this year it's showing proper TC genesis. A nice site after the boring winter months here!

That's not 99W, but we have two new invests. I was looking at that area a couple of days ago and wondering if anything would come from it.

Also the wavy train coming from Africa seems to have stopped.

Could expect as much - the cyclone season in the North Indian Ocean typically calms around this time as the monsoon season gets in gear, and the SHEM season is basically over as well. While May is the most inactive month, the beginning of June tends to be as well before conditions really become active in the Eastern and Western Pac.

The global models dont show anything of significance for the next 10 days so lets see how much time will pass before we see the second named storm (Bertha).

Well this is indeed some down time, as per normal really after a fairly active May compared to normal, esp in the Wpac.

Still hopefully we can have a little break before things no doubt ramp up in a big way in July-August across the N.Hemisphere.
