Bermuda preparations, observations and web cams thread

#1 Postby MiamiensisWx » Sun Jul 06, 2008 10:24 pm

I'll start this thread for the residents in Bermuda. It is still early, but it would be prudent to post advice for season preparations here. This thread will be utilized for observations and residents' reports as Bertha moves closer over the upcoming days.

Yes... I vaguely remember bdabye. I believe that person claimed to live in Bermuda and posted an interesting discussion on the BDA (Bermuda) "shark oil" theory for Irene back in '05.

We can also post the StormCarib reports.

I will send him/her an e-mail to see if we can get comments on what is happening in Bermuda at the moment and as Bertha draws closer.

Good idea to be prepared but just a bit too early to be implying Bermuda is the target.

There is far too much uncertainty in the forecast beyond 5+ days.

Depending on the evolution of Bertha over the next few days, I'll probably post a Southeast/Carolinas thread for preparations and observations as well. Remember that surf and the "indirect effects" of Bertha will affect that region and Bermuda, too.

When Bermuda gets into the three-day cone, I'll probably start up a zoomed-in surface plot graphic to be updated every twenty minutes.

I agree, and I'm not implying Bermuda (or any region) is the target. This thread is good for preparations advice, and seasonal preps should be done in Bermuda and elsewhere, regardless of whether they're targeted specifically by Bertha.

Luis and others can pin this thread and future ones as they see fit... thanks!

Bermuda updates:

http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/bermuda.shtml

"Hello everyone we will be watching the weather very closely this up coming week as the tracks of TS Bertha which will be Hurricane Bertha in at least 48 hours is now projected to come very close to us by next weekend. I don't believe that I am even discussing a hurricane this far north in early July as the records back to 1854 had only one hurricane affect Bermuda in July hurricane Alice July 4th 1973 cpoa 25 miles with wind of 92mph. and a small unnamed tropical storm in June 1957 Hurricanes / Tropical Storms do not usually affect us in July mostly in late August September and even October..

The weather has been peculiar all year so far with a record rainfall over 11 inches in May with cooler temperatures and in June we had less then a quarter of the average rainfall 1.15 inches. We have not had any significant rainfall for almost a month now, very dry and landscape turning brown from lack of moisture. Its been very hot over the past few weeks but the humidity has been down these past few days so hopefully this will work in our favor and keep Bertha south if the air stays dry.

So this week will be one of preparing just in case, as the predicted track tonight would have her close to our west and of course Bertha's east which has most of the weather. If this course proves correct then it would be almost a carbon copy of what we experienced with Fabian Sept 5th 2003.

That's it for now will try and keep you updated as the week progresses.

Regards
Keith"

The island paper....a little slow updating....but useful...
http://www.royalgazette.com/

Some of the worst damage in 2003 was the causeway from the main island over to the airport....the causeway took a hit as well as the airport main floor. NE end of the island. Spent the spring and part of the summer of 2004 in that area and they were still cleaning up.

Bermuda Weather Service
http://www.weather.bm/ and their webcam http://www.weather.bm/WebCam.asp

Their radar.... login and password is guest
http://199.172.239.3/gemamet/index.jsp
Site appears to be having problems right now both in IE and Firefox.

Map of island
http://www.bermuda.com/guidesmaps/

oh yeah.... RumSwizzle's and Dark&Stormy their best two drinks!!
http://www.swizzleinn.com/

but google earth is quite current and more fun if you have it

Vast majority residential construction is concrete....including roofs which are kept clean as runoff rain water is piped to each home's cistern for the residents use....not all home have 'the pipe'...aka central water service from the desalination plant.

BELCO...the island's electric...does the normal island deal of shutting off juice prior to severe weather to save damage.

I agree Bermuda is the biggest threat now (possibly followed by Atlantic Canada).

Ahhh yes, a hurricane approaches, a bit of surf, a little rain, gusty winds. We could use all that about now. Very hot and dry here with little to no wind for the last few weeks and few showers
We're ALWAYS ready here.
2003 Fabian kicked our butt, three months later you'd never know we were hit so hard (three dead though, that was awfull but why on earth were they crossing the causway at the peak)
2006 Florence slapped us with gusts to 97kts, no damage except a few fallen branches, no injuries. Work as normal the next day
But this storm is still far away. We're aware of it, no one panics, still plenty of time. Bermuda is built to withstand storms. This is a great place to be in a hurricane.
Who knows, it may slap us hard, but WE WILL BE READY.
Historicly speaking, when models shift east of us, the storm will go east
We are a very small dot in the Atlantic. This is a small storm.
Rest assured WE ARE WATCHING

I'm confused. What does that have to do with hurakan seeing if he can get some info? Are you still drunk on girly drinks?

There's really no foolproof way to avoid spamming. Even if one uses tactics like javascript encoding and so on to hide addresses from spiders (as I've done on various websites I've built) someone knowing your email address can maliciously post it on a forum for the spiders to find.
