Alternative satellite imagery

#1 Postby Derek Ortt » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:24 pm

I have seen many comments on the lack of satellite imagery at the NHC site today.

I posted this in the active storms thread, but am concerned that it got buried

you can get alternative satellite imagery here http://www.nwhhc.com/satellite.html (yes... I learned enough McIdas to make these loops and adjust them as necessary)

also, I am getting the outdated images on the NHC LOOP only. The still images are still up to date on the NHC site

It is likely a small c-shell script problem would be my guess. Maybe something small was changed that is causing the loop to not update

Thanks Derek, I really prefer your animated images to the java loops.

Do you set the color scale for the infrared or is that from another source?

Very handy Derek, thank you.

I too have issues with the java animations, so these loops are much better for me.

I set the color swcale

that IR scale was something like my 12th attempt at getting a good one

as for Java... I have been thinking about making them java for next season... but if everyone likes the simple animated gifs better... I can keep them as is

I like these better, but the variety is lacking. I have gotten to the point that that I hate Java because point blank sometimes they dont wanna load.

I really likes the old RAMDIS animated gif display box, where you could control the speed, but gifs are better than java for me.

My issue with the color scale is the pink blends in with the orange plus many of the pink levels looks the same.

Let's see if I can ascii out a color scale. :)

Something that takes orange, still goes pink but then drifts to dark red fading to black instead of bright purple might be easier to distinguish ... or I might be nuts.

it does go to black at the top of the scale. I set the black color to represent truly the coldest cloud tops

I think Bertha came close yesterday to having the black colors (I think those start at -80C... but I'll need to check)

I like that web page
thanks Derek
but am I missing something? I get no animation.
When I click on any of the Latest Image Loop, I get a still picture only.

regarding Java, I am still using Java 2 Platform, version 1.5.0
I think the latest version is 6. When I used that, I had the worst problems. it would crash my computer . give me all sort of errors, and so other fun things, so I went back to using the older version.

the latest image and loop are two second links

make sure you are clicking on loop and not latest image if you want to see an animation

My problem with Java is that it takes 3 centuries longer to load.

Great stuff, Derek. MANY THANKS!!!

As for the Java issues, here I thought I was the only one with those problems!! On one hand, it's nice to see I'm not alone, but on the other - what's up with Java being such a problem for so many? Are there some parameters I can adjust to make Java more agreeable with my system?

Java and firefox don't get along to well, it will occasionally run out of memory causing the browser to hang or crash.

You can add:

-Xms64m -Xmx256m

to the applet runtime settings in the control panel, but it only delays the crash.

In short, it's crap. :)

just a brief note,

if you see one of the floaters "jump"... that only means that I have moved it.

I made the floater large enough so that I only have to move once a day in the deep tropics or high latitudes, and once every 2 or more days elsewhere

Thanks again for these Derek. I'm in Gulf Shores at the moment with a terrible wireless connection, but I can get these loops to load ... eventually. Java loops, forgetaboutit. :)

I never knew that Java caused so many problems for so many users

Something tells me that these loops will NEVER be converted to Java, given the positive reviews to them and the concerns about Java

Because of the change in center point, there is a horribly annoying jump in the otherwise most excellent satellite loop. Anyway to kill the pre-jump frames, either something you do, or something I can do?
