Has a hurricane ever hit South Florida from the NE

#1 Postby cpdaman » Sat Aug 23, 2008 9:50 pm

They say the SE coast of florida is not that prone to big storm surge's. I wasn't sure how big a factor the Bahamas blocking most wave action attributed to this (to the East and SE especially) /and or the shallower water nearby the bahamian island chain.

Was thinking that any big storm coming down from the SW and hitting say (West palm beach) or Delray area, would probably unload a rather large storm surge, pretty deep and warm gulf stream water's very near shore as well as a long fetch of open water, was wondering if anything like this ever happened. Maybe if not as a hurricane, a subtropical storm, last year Andrea almost took a run at the E. coast of florida (after N.C) bud faded and turned back around. anyone know of a situation like i'm talking about occuring in FL.

Well, Betsy 1965, sort of ... although she was going west by the time she made landfall.

its the deep water

that is why Biscayne Bay can have surges over 15 feet, but Miami Beach and Key Biscayne likely will never see higher than 10

Yes, because Biscayne bay is VERY shallow. I was out there fishing when I visited the keys, a 6 foot man could touch bottom in half of it.

Yet, even a 15 ft surge in S. Biscayne Bay will not penetrate very far inland, thanks to the big slab of coral rock right near the bayshore.
