This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Warm Core Low to the South of Aleutian?

#1 Postby wyq614 » Thu Nov 27, 2008 11:27 pm

In my forum we've been keeping an eye on a low to the south of Aleutian that some of our member believe it's a warm core low after having analyzed the weather chart from JMA and NOAA. According to the chart of 00 UTC today, it seems to us that, like 850 and 700 hpa layer, in the 500hpa layer also exists a warm core structure. Correct us if we are wrong, but maybe there is a TC right here?

Not enough deep convection to be classified a TC I'd say. Warm seclusion perhaps?

SSTs are in the 40s to low 50s up there. This isn't a tropical system.

Isnt it true that SST's have to be looked at any latitude differently. I thought, and correct me if I am wrong, that SSTs can be quite low, but as long as the interior core of the system is quite a bit warmer, it may be at least subtropical.

It's true that subtropical and even tropical storms can form over SSTs below 25C, maybe down to 20-22C. But we're talking 8-10C water. That's a bit icy for even subtropical storms.

Add to that, there's a great deal of cold air wrapping into the system from the west as shown by the massive cumliform cloud field.
