Can you predict the possibility of a December storm?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Can you predict the possibility of a December storm?

#1 Postby Cleveland Kent Evans » Wed Dec 03, 2008 9:53 am

In the five seasons previous to this one, it seems there have been three named storms that formed in December: Peter in 2003, Zeta in 2005, and Olga in 2007.

Is there any predictability to whether or not you have an off-season storm in December? Do those of you who have meteorological expertise know if 2008 has conditions that make it more or less likely that there will be a December named storm? Or are December storms so rare that it's completely unpredictable whether one will pop up or not?

I think the chances are just higher if the season is above average meaning better conditions are possible than usual. I look at it as what are the chances of a non-tropical low becoming a STS or TS anywhere during December.

Hurricane Epsilon spent 8 days of its life in December.

I certainly would not be surprised to see one though...
