KPRC News Coverage On Hurricane Jerry of 1989

#1 Postby Ptarmigan » Tue Jul 21, 2009 11:46 pm

KPRC News coverage of Hurricane Jerry of 1989. Quite a small hurricane like Humberto of 2007. I read Jerry was unpredictable.

Even back then, they were uttering that "could have been worse" line  . Comparing it to Hurricane Hugo is pretty bad too.

This video also commented on Hurricane Alicia but they pronounced it A-LEESH-A like everyone else does. I keep thinking it should be AL-A-CA.

Thanks for posting Ptarmigan! I was working when Jerry came ashore and went through the eyewall as well as the eye. Those of us that were living/working in the eastern side of the Metro Area took a hit from this nasty "litttle" hurricane. Remember all to well the eyewall experience, small tornadoes, and flooding that it produced that Sunday evening. It actually took down the main power lines that crossed the Houston Ship Channel near the old Baytown Tunnel. Folks in DT Houston didn't get much of anything, except for a few brief wind gusts to 40 mph while those along W/N Galveston and Trinity Bays were being hit with near 100 mph gusts and sustained winds to 85 and very heavy rain squalls and tornadoes. Great seeing Ted Shaw as well. I suspect Stormcloud was working that evening at KHOU. :ggreen: Dang, I'm getting old.

Hurricane Jerry dumped up to 6.4 inches of rain in Silsbee. I got nothing from Jerry that time. Just some clouds. When I look back, it is like Humberto in 2007, both were small hurricanes.

I was in near NE Houston that day I I couldn't beleive the sun was out. Not one drop of rain, just gusty wind. And to think that the eye was less than 30 miles away. What a small storm.

Yes, they were. Jerry was no Alicia and it was very costly. Hugo was much worse.

I remember it all too well. I was in Dallas with 11 teens on a Church trip. We rushed back to the Spring Branch area of Houston so everyone would be safe with their families and we ended up with essentially a non-event in our area. I think we may have gotten 4" inches of rain, but I could not believe there was a Hurricane on the other side of town since there was basically no wind that was unusual in our area. I might have called it breezy.
