I interviewed Dr. Phil Klotzbach of Colorado State University for a column posted a few hours ago on Examiner.com. This is going to be a busy season. All the tropical cyclone-friendly features are coming together, including record-high anomalous sea surface temperatures, lower than normal sea level pressures and dissipation of El Nino.
In the same article, Accuweather meteorologist Joe Bastardi says this could be a season from "Hades." Not good.

Re: Dr. Phil Klotzbach talks about upcoming season
Here are several quotes from the article:
The end of El Niño coupled with very warm sea surface temperatures are conditions that will result in above-average probability of a United States and Caribbean major hurricane landfall this season, Klotzbach says. In fact, activity in the tropics could ramp up early.
“We might see some activity in the tropical Atlantic early this season – potentially in July. If you get activity that early, it’s a sign of a very active season ahead,” says Klotzbach.

Bastardi says this season could turn into a nightmare if all the right conditions come together.
“In a worst-case scenario, this might turn into a hurricane season from Hades. Given what I see now, I would rather be embarrassed by overstating the threat than fall short in my predictions of what could happen,” he says.

No problem. Phil Klotzbach is very easy to talk with and was very forthcoming. As you might expect, he and Bill Gray are up to their eyeballs peparing their next forecast, which will be issued June 2. My guess is that they will increase the number of named storms to 17 from the current forecast of 15.
