Is Anyone Else Finding It Difficult To Access NHC Site?

#1 Postby abajan » Wed Jun 30, 2010 6:28 am

For several weeks now, whenever I try to access the NHC website I get the “Server not found” error pictured below. I then have to click the “Try Again” button several times until it eventually loads. Anyone else experiencing this problem? (I’m on dial-up...yeah I know, dial-up sucks!)

I am having trouble with the ghcc site not showing images, but no problems with the NHC. DO you have this link? I know they added NOAA to it awhile back.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
hope this helps.

oooops, that is the link you have. Sorry I can't help you.

It may be purely coincidental but after re-enabling Java, that site is loading okay on the first try. On the advice of a pop-up message some weeks ago warning of a security vulnerability, I had disabled Java but just last night I updated to the most recent version. So I went ahead and re-enabled it to see if it would make any difference to the page load situation.

EDIT: Oops... Nope, it’s just a coincidence. It’s still happening.

Abajan,

 I understand what you're going through! Dial up is slow, for sure. A lot of folks designing websites in U.S. have never used dialup, and few users for a decade or more. In the meantime, websites have grown in content and sophistication, and recently added more stringent security measures, especially US gov sites. Pipeline from Caribbean to mainland is a bottleneck, too. Even my ADSL can, during peak usage, time-out on popular weather sites.

It seems to get worse each year, not better, as ISP's here aren't adequately keeping up with demand. I guess if they did, it would cost even more! But I have to say, cell phone promos like LIME's giving away 500 free text messages every time you make a call over 4min long, expiring before midnight, and good to all islands in their network, is likely not helping the limited bandwidth situation!

Can you access the text version of NHC? http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?text

Yep. My (Windows XP Service Pack 2) firewall is on. It never caused any problems before.

Nope. Same problem. Actually, I usually browse the text versions of all their pages anyway.
Thanks to both artist and yourself for your responses.

ok, so you are not using any other security software? What setting do you have windows firewall on? Next, since you are using service pack 2, is there a reason you have not updated to service pack 3? Microsoft is going to quit supporting Windows XP Service Pack 2 shortly is my understanding, so you need to update that if you can to Service Pack 3 to help keep your computer safe. Third, I would like you to run trend micros housecall on your computer if you can. Here is the link and it is free. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
If it works for you come back and let me know what it finds.

I got your PM, artist. Sorry for taking so long to reply but it seems the problem has cleared itself up, at least for the time being. All I did was run a full scan of my computer with Housecall last night. It didn't find any viruses or anything. My suspicion is that the problem was (is?) ISP related rather than anything to do with my computer. They have been having some dial-up issues for some time.

Possibly related but I have had DNS issues with Comcast lately...especially during overnight. Moved to OpenDNS and runs great. OpenDNS seems to be able to catch changes and update faster. http://www.opendns.com/ Basic is free. Your mileage may vary...grin
