Wow! I am shocked that that MANY record pressures occured in the West Pacific? I know about STY Tip, STY June, and such but all of that? GOD! Are there anymore that isn't listed? Makes me wonder if recon were still operating here, that list should be a whole lot different!

Super typhoon Tip was an absolute monster with not only its intensity, but his immense size. Can you imagine something like tip making landfall in the United States. Complete annihilation and Tip would likely flatten any major city it impacted. Wilma was very intense, but there have been several more intense storms globally. I wonder if Wilma is as low as it gets. I'm sure that with a global increase in water temperatures that we could see even stronger storms in the future.

In terms of size and intensity, it would be difficult to surpass Typhoon Tip (October 1979). On the other hand, one of the smallest storms ever (in terms of size) was Cyclone Tracy, which struck Darwin, Australia, on Christmas morning of 1974. I think in terms of intensity, Tracy was a Cat 4.

The map linked below shows the size differential of these two incredible storms:

I was looking around the web today and i found a very interesting article about the very powerful typhoons that have occured after August 1987 (The date when Recon ended). Read this and let me know what you think. It even has a recorded presentation!

http://ams.confex.com/ams/26HURR/techpr ... _75465.htm

Some are even said to be even STRONGER than STY Tip with higher dvorak estimates! for example, Angela (1995)(8.5),Gay (1992)(8.7)!! and many others. Since then, have there been any typhoons that have occured that isn't included in the investigation?

Yeah there probably have been the odd system that has gone deeper then Tip, I doubt Tip is the absolute lowest we can go...but without recon its just impossible to know.

Why are there no more recons? I think that they could be very helpful on the WPAC:

That map is impressive. Had no idea Tip was so massive! Imagine that hitting the east coast of the US...

Too bad, maybe if they chose only a few storms per season.

It does happen rarely from time to time, normally as part of a wider research project. We had recon into STY Jangmi in 2008. It proved useful and was a rare but fun chance to follow WPac recon, which found 163 knot FL winds and a central pressure in Jangmi of 905 hPa, which made it the strongest storm in 13 years at the time (since equalled by STY Nida).

Actually, that wikipedia list is not very accurate for WPAC. Rita in 1978 was 878 mb (I know, I was working that storm at Clark AB and copying recon obs) there was another at 879 mb just before recon ended. JTWC carried Gay in 1992 at 872 though that was an estimate.

So the WPAC list starts something like this:
Tip 1979 870 mb
June 1975 876 mb
Nora 1973 877mb
Ida 1956 877 mb
Rita 1978 878 mb
One at 879 mb (will have to look it up)
then in the World's record book comes Wilma at 882 mb. You need to sort through the lists to find the remaining 4 of the top ten.

Dvork estimates had Monica off the coast of Australia at 869 mb but there was no recon and the RSMCs didn't go with it.

If Tip was to hit America, like Houston, New Orleans, Miami, or New York, it would make Katrina like a summer thunderstorm.

Found it-STY Vanessa had a measured pressure by recon of 879 mb on October 26, 1984.

That's interesting. What had been the estimated pressure of Jangmi before the recon measurement? I know they are professionals but sometimes I have a difficult time trusting an "estimated" minimum central pressure. If the estimates were close to the actual measurement, then maybe Tip really is still the top dog.
