Worldwide activity v.s. mean - September 7

#1 Postby Chacor » Tue Sep 07, 2010 6:39 am

Just thought I'd have a look at the current worldwide activity v.s. the mean for each basin as of September 7.

Atlantic: SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE
Current: NS 8 HU 3 MH 2
Mean (1966-2009): NS 6 (Sept 8) HU 3 (Sept 9) MH 1 (Sept 4)
Status: NS + HU + MH +

The Atlantic is above average in all three categories to date, being a bit over 2 named storms above mean, just slightly above mean in terms of number of hurricanes, and more than one major hurricane above mean.

East Pacific: BELOW AVERAGE
Current: NS 6 HU 3 MH 2
Mean (1971-2009): NS 11 (Sept 10) HU 6 (Sept 9) MH ~2.5
Status: NS - HU - MH -

The East Pacific appears to be between slightly below and below average at the moment, being five named storms under the 1971-2009 mean and three hurricanes below. Likewise, in terms of major hurricanes, the basin is under average. In the Central Pacific, no tropical cyclones on September 7 is the first time since 1979, when there were no tropical cyclones in that basin the whole year.

West Pacific:
Current: NS 9 TY 3
Mean (1951-2008): NS 15.3
Status: BELOW AVERAGE

We remain below average in the West Pacific by 6.3 named storms, but the bulk of the season is probably yet to come. In 1998, the slowest season since the JMA started keeping wind speed records in 1977, we had had only four (!) named storms at this point.

To summarise: Atlantic is slightly above average; elsewhere worldwide below average. The Central Pacific stands out the most for me as it hasn't had its first tropical cyclone yet this year, something which hasn't happened in over 30 years.

I'm guessing this is counting storms that moved in from the East Pacific?

The East Pacific has been dead dead dead this year (well, since June at least). The West Pacific has picked up in total activity the last couple of weeks but still has had a lack of any significant major typhoon activity (with one exception).
