Possible development off East Coast soon?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Possible development off East Coast soon?

#1 Postby somethingfunny » Fri Aug 19, 2011 10:55 am

I figured I'd make a thread for this since it's not very far away. Could be a quickie little surprise development from the frontal zone, like Franklin and Cindy. It might be subtropical, but I think it is a good candidate to cross another name off the list.

It's had global model support for quite some time. Here's the latest, 12z GFS at 24 hours:

Vorticity is quite strong.

GFS believes it will be cold-core, however.

I'll be honest, with TD8 and 98L looking like they'll develop before 97L, I'm rooting for this little thing to form just so that 97L won't be named Jose.

I am not a meteorologist, and any posts made by me are not official forecasts or to be interpreted as being intelligent. These posts are just my opinions and are probably silly opinions.

I've been watching this system for a while now, and I have to agree. Vorticity has increased in many atmospheric layers compared to yesterday, and convection is becoming more concentrated in its vicinity. Definitely looks like the precursor to what could become another Franklin/Bret-esque system to me.

Edit: with regards to the cold-core, this looks like something that could undergo subtropical cyclogenesis. Might become tropical later on, but the shear should start relaxing soon for that to occur.

Good catch, Somethingfunny. I'm not sure many people were scouting the east coast, with the current eastern Atlantic invests. I agree, this needs to be watched...
