Today marks the 125 anniversary of the Indianola, Tx storm

#1 Postby Radiogirltx » Sat Aug 20, 2011 1:51 pm

I've lived in port lavaca for 20 years, And enjoy spending time in the ghost town of indianola. It was ravaged by a storm in 1875, then demolished 11 years later in 1886 by a even larger storm. Some of the remains if the town are still under the bay.... The storm moved the shoreline in quite a bit.

Interesting side bar..... In 1886, Texas was suffering under a sever drought.... This storm ended the drought.

1886 had a drought, likely one of the worst besides 1917-1918, 1950-1957, and this one. 1886 had a huge freeze earlier that year. It did end the drought too. Perhaps, we could be seeing a repeat of 1886? 1886 had four hurricanes hitting Texas, the most prior to 2004. Also, Florida was hit by 3 hurricanes and within days apart in same location! Talk about that happening today. Talk about that happening today. Indianola was destroyed in the 1886 Hurricane and Galveston grew as a result only to be destroyed in the 1900 Hurricane.

Pretty much all that is left of Indianola today.

That looks like the boat ramp at the fishing marina. It's interesting going thru the two cemeteries at Indianola. Both are loaded with headstones with dates of 9/17/1875 and 8/20/1886...... The storm dates.....

One of the most spooky and compelling weather stories in Texas history, IMO.

I can't imagine what kind of damage this storm would have caused if it hit today...
