This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

NOAA may not have so many satellites in 2016

#1 Postby Canelaw99 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 8:42 am

Saw this article this morning, and figured it was pretty relevant here, as we LOVE seeing all the sat images, and the NHC relies on the satellites. NOT posting it for anything other than passing along information....

Okay there are 1495821 things I can thin off that need to be cut before satellites.

Exactly, it's one of the very last things that should be cut, in other words never cut but bolstered.

This is one of the things that concerns me the most, cuts to weather related programs and items. It's the type of thing that can keep a weather fanatic up at night. There should be more invested in it than ever before, not cut! I'm not too worried about the current service being affected but by how fast advancements are occurring, delays in any new technology or upgrade irks me.

Final note, some of those comments on that article make my head spin in amazement (in a negative way).

This issue is getting more and more political but I'll just say it anyway: Gee, why doesn't a private weather firm send up a satellite?

I am not a meteorologist, and any posts made by me are not official forecasts or to be interpreted as being intelligent. These posts are just my opinions and are probably silly opinions.

Wheres the profitability? Who's going to buy the data from them?

Theres a reason why companies like Virgin and SpaceX are doing what their doing. Getting to near earth orbit is finally cheap enough where they can make money on it.
