The Name That Storm game, series III

#1 Postby Chacor » Tue Aug 30, 2011 11:24 am

This has been tried twice before, in 2007 (44 pages) and in 2009 (just 4 pages). Basically, you can post a satellite picture, advisory snippet, discussion snippet, radar picture, anything related to a tropical depression, storm, hurricane, typhoon or cyclone. Others will then attempt to guess, and every correct guess scores a point.

This ran for 44 pages in 2007 so it certainly has the potential to be a fun time-waster while we observe Katia, Talas and Nanmadol from a distance.

Anyone can post a new image or advisory at any time, but try to keep it interesting, and if you post a satellite image, try to limit the number of storms in it. (Also, try to make sure the file name doesn't give the answer away!)

Original "Name that hurricane"
"Name that storm vol 2"

----
I'll start, and anyone can have a guess.

It's going to be in the form of an advisory.

...(Storm) POSES A THREAT TO NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST
GULF COAST...

A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM GRAND ISLE LOUISIANA
TO CEDAR KEY FLORIDA. HURRICANE WARNINGS MAY BE ISSUED
FOR A PORTION OF THIS AREA TONIGHT OR SATURDAY. MARINE
AND OFFSHORE INDUSTRIES SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONARY ACTIONS
TODAY.

AT 3 PM EDT...1900Z...NAVY RECONNAISSANCE LOCATED THE
CENTRE OF (storm) NEAR LATITUDE 23.8 NORTH... LONGITUDE
90.4 WEST OR ABOUT 425 MILES SOUTH OF NEW ORLEANS.

Hint: This was when advisories were not issued at the current timings (5, 11, 17, 23 EDT). Second hint: This storm peaked as a Category 4.

Have fun!

Hmm. "NAVY RECONNAISSANCE" and advisory times are interesting but I don't know how far back that goes.

I'll guess Georges but that might be too recent.

I'll give a go. This is the tropical weather outlook at some time before this storm developed.

REPORTS FROM A RECONNAISSANCE PLANE...SATELLITE DATA...AND SHIP
OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT THE BROAD LOW PRESSURE AREA LOCATED A
COUPLE HUNDRED MILES EAST OF THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS REMAINS
DISORGANIZED. SHOWER ACTIVITY HAS DIMINISHED NEAR A SMALL LOW-LEVEL
SWIRL NORTH OF THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS...WHILE THUNDERSTORM
ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED NEAR A MID-LEVEL CIRCULATION LOCATED ABOUT
300 MILES NORTHEAST OF THE WEAK LOW-LEVEL SWIRL. HOWEVER...
UPPER-LEVEL CONDITIONS HAVE BECOME MORE FAVORABLE AND A TROPICAL
DEPRESSION COULD STILL FORM DURING THE NEXT DAY OR SO. EVEN IF THE
SYSTEM DOES NOT BECOME A TROPICAL CYCLONE...IT WILL BRING SHOWERS
AND GUSTY WINDS TO PORTIONS OF THE BAHAMAS...SOUTH FLORIDA AND THE
FLORIDA KEYS DURING THE NEXT DAY OR TWO. ALL INTERESTS IN THIS AREA
SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM. AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT IS SCHEDULED TO INVESTIGATE THE AREA AGAIN
TOMORROW.
