Bill Read has announced his retirement as of June 1. The search for a new director has begun.

While I'm not up on the politics of the NHC, I wonder if it will be internal (Rappaport?) or external?

I'd like to see Bryan Norcross be the next director.

Rappaport turned the job down last time when it was offered to him; before it was offered to Read.

Norcross will bring a mattress with him to hide under in the office; plus he likely makes a lot more money with TWC and his going business venture:
http://emergency.info/about-aen.html.

I don't know what TWC pays now; but John Hope started at $80,000 there in 1982; when just about all the other on-camera guys were getting $30,000.

At least a couple of "our" pro-mets are definitetly qualified to take a/the position at NHC.

I'll be talking with Bill at the NHC next week in Orlando. Will see if he knows or can say anything.

I've asked around and have promises of knowledge when it is available. Usual "suspects' are being talked about in the weather community, but nothing concrete I am aware of. I think we will know something in the next3-4 weeks.

3-4 weeks? I hope this is settled by the time the official forecast is released. Who are the usual suspects anyways? I know Rappaport has no interest in the job.

Rappaport is one of the usual suspects that has been mentioned, which he normally is, but as you say he has always ends up not being the one.

I did talk with Bill Read at the AMS conference the week before last. He's out of the loop, but mentioned some of the interviewees such as Steve Lyons, Ed Rappaport and some admiral. A committee is handling the pick so it's out of his hands. Typically, as Bill said, they don't announce the replacement until the current director is leaving so there's no overlap.

Why? What difference would it make?

RE: Steve Lyons - now that would be interesting. His resume would be very solid. Former A&M Professor. Former NHC forecaster. Former "Head Tropical Weather Media Guy" at TWC & successor to John Hope. Been back at NWS (San Angelo of all places) just long enough get re-acquainted with the NOAA Guidelines and SOP for everything....hmm......hmm.....

This is exactly what I thought the day he left TWC. Especially knowing that Read said it was not going to be but a few years that he would be in the chief cat herder position.

But fate will intervene and it will be someone we have never heard of. Hope not.
