Low pressure west of Hawaii

An upper level low centered 500 miles west of Kauai is sending mid and high clouds over the islands. Within 200 miles of the center of circulation, near 22°N 168°W, layered clouds with embedded thunderstorms extend as high as 45 thousand feet. A convergent band of layered clouds arcs to the southeast and extends south and then southwest, where it merges with the intertropical convergence zone near 8°N 170°W. This band also contains embedded thunderstorms with tops reaching 52 thousand feet near 10°N 163°W.

A surface low sits under the upper low, and scattered low clouds are moving south between 15°N and 23°N from 172°W to the dateline as the low clouds rotate around the surface low. From 10 and 15°N, between the same longitudes, clouds veer out of the west. Otherwise, visible low clouds are moving toward the west across the central Pacific with tops of 6 thousand feet near 140°W, growing to 12 thousand feet by the dateline.

Too late in the year and a little too far away to be considered a Kona Low, but an interesting feature nonetheless.

It's sitting right over a pocket of warmer waters.
