This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Weekend storms/no media blitz?

#1 Postby Houstonia » Sat Aug 30, 2003 3:31 pm

Maybe it's just me... I was watching the TV earlier this afternoon (in Houston, Tx, btw), and NONE Of the stations were saying anything about Grace.

KTRK/ABC had footbal. KHOU/CBS had tennis, KPRC/NBC had autoracing, but at least THEY were running a "tropical storm warning" logo at the top of the screen. I checked all the UHF stations too.. nothing there either.

Is this because the storm formed so quickly? is it because it's a holiday weekend? Is it because sports (and it's advertisers) are so much more important than weather?

I think you'll begin to see more coverage of this storm as she get's closer and the rains begin in earnest here in Houston. I believe you are right though... Not enough updates this afternoon and I am also sure there are alot of people that are unaware of this storm due to the Holiday weekend.

Went to walmart and no one knew about the storm - listen to 3 different radio stations and not one mentioned the TD/TS out in the GOM. Rain changes all weekend were 40% and partly cloudy. I"m watching the 5 p.m. news to see what is said.

There usually aren't weather updates when there should be on weekends. There are normally sporting events on the three major networks and something unfortunately has to be imminent for coverage during the weekend.

They've upped our chances to 80% for Sunday and Monday and the KFDM website updated with TS Grace information shortly after she was upgraded. I don't have the TV on locally so I can't comment on that.

This could prove to be a dangerous situation for the uninformed. I've been hearing for the past couple of days meteorologists telling residents to keep a close eye on the weather this weekend. Sure enough it has changed and I do think all media outlets should be doing there best to inform. Hopefully they get on the ball soon.
