Good morning. The latest advisory at 5 AM EDT keeps maximum sustained winds with major Hurricane Fabian at a powerful 140 mph with higher gusts.
At 5 AM EDT, the center of major Hurricane Fabian was located near latitude 18.6 degrees north, longitude 55.8 degrees west or about 400 miles due east of the northern Leeward Islands.
Fabian is moving towards the west at near 10 mph and this motion is expected to continue with a gradual turn to the west northwest anticipated withn the next 24 hours. This should keep the center of Hurricane Fabian north of the Lesser Antillies as it passes to the north of there in the next day or two.
An airforce reserve hurricane hunter aircraft indicated that maximum sustained winds with Fabian remain at 140 mph with higher gusts. This makes Fabian a very dangerous category 4 hurricane on the saffir simpson hurricane scale. Some fluctuations are likely over the next 24 hours. Hurricane force winds extend outward 50 miles from the center while tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.
An air force hurricane hunter aircraft recently reported a minimum central pressure of 949 mb or 28.02 inches.
Looking ahead to the future reveals a potential threat from Fabian on the US east coast. However whether this thing makes landfall or not, indirect effects will already be felt along the mid atlantic and northeast US coast in the form of very high swells, large battering waves and dangerous rip currents as well as possible beach erosion along the coast, even well away from the hurricane. If there are more direct effects potentially by next weekend along the eastern seaboard, those indirect effects would be much much worse obviously!!! Stay tuned!!
Hurricane Jimena in the central Pacific approaches the big island of Hawaii. A hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning are in effect for the big island of Hawaii. The biggest threats for the big island includes large battering waves of 8-12 in the surf zones combined with very dangerous rip currents, sustained winds of 35-50 mph with gusts close to 75 mph and rainfall amounts of 6-10 inches, which could result in flash floodng and mudslides on the big island today.
At 5 AM EDT 11 PM HST, the center of Hurricane Jimena was located near latitude 18.1 north, longitude 154.0 west or about 130 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Jimena is moving west at 17 mph. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 80 mph with higher gusts. Minimum central pressure is now 987 mb or 29.15 inches.
More updates later this morning guaranteed, good morning folks and have a fun and safe labor day!!!
