With winds forecasted to be 110 kts, what kind of damage can the people of Bermuda expect with this storm? I know it will be less than Andrew, but then again, the homes aren't built as ours either. :(

I was on GOPBI board... until they had their little bright experiment

Bermuda could be leveled by this hurricane if it makes a direct hit, especially if it becomes a bit stronger that expected.

64,000 people live in Bermuda, the vast majority will be homeless this time tomorrow if this makes a direct hit

A 940 mb/ 125-130 mph hurricane will do a lot of damage -- especially a large one like Fabian....
This hurricane reminds me somewhat of Hugo....which had a landfall pressure of 934 mb and sustained winds of 135 mph....also hurricanes Betsy (948 mb & 130 mph) and Frederic (946 mb & 125-130 mph) come to mind -- and all three caused billions in damage.

As bad as this is for Bermuda...it would be far worse if it were Miami-Ft Lauderdale in the crosshairs. This size and intensity hurricane in Southern Florida might be the first 100 billion dollar hurricane. :o :o

Thankfully, the eye wall has colappsed with Fabian; however, it still remains a dangerous major hurricane and will still do extensive damage this afternoon when it makes its direct hit on Bermuda

Thanks for the update, Derek. I am praying for the people of Bermuda, that somehow the damage will not be too severe.

Bermus

#10 Postby jfaul » Fri Sep 05, 2003 9:36 am

Bermuda,

I have been to bermuda several times and my feeling is that a majority of the people will not be homeless. Yes, they will lose power, etc. but most of the construction is masonary and is made to withstand hurricanes..this isn't Homestead and the crappy pre-andrew construction that was going in the building boom of the 80's. Furthermore, Bermuda is very wealthy..this isn't jamaica where most people are living in shacks. Wish them well.

This is very good to know. I am feeling a little better about their situation. Thanks!

They mentioned on the news this morning that outer walls in buildings and homes on Bermuda are required to be 8 inches thick. I suppose that could help, to a point?
