HURRICANE HISTORICAL QUESTION?

#1 Postby tropicsPR » Fri Sep 05, 2003 5:59 pm

Are there any historical records for hurricanes arriving to the coasts of Europe? I mean Spain, France, England or farther north?

I remember hearing that Faith made landfall along the Portugal coast. I don't recall the year.

Do u mean as a hurricane or a tropical storm or a storm that has generated into a extratropical storm.

Faith (or the remnants) made landfall in Norway in 1966. The remnants were tracked across Russia, and finally dissipated 300 miles from the north pole. (Now that's some heat transfer!)

Faith was still listed as a cat2 at 60.4N and 12W. (somehow I doubt these numbers)

The closest I could see a hurricane hitting Europe was Debbie in 1961, which became extratropical just off the coast of Ireland.

Also, there's been some debate on whether the storm that destroyed the Spanish Armada off the Scottish coast as it was heading for an invasion of England in 1588 was in fact a hurricane, or the extratropical remnants.

No problem. I guess all those encyclopedias I used to immerse myself into when I was little are finally paying off! :D

Hurricane Faith
(August 21 to September 7, 1966)
Faith maintained hurricane intensity for a period of 15 days while traveling a complicated route around the southern, western and northern perimeter of the Bermuda high pressure system. The entire track of Faith represents one of the longest hurricane tracks on record. The centre of the hurricane passed within 40 kilometres of St. Maarten, Leeward Islands. There were gale force winds in the northern islands of the Leewards, the Virgin Islands, and along the northern coast of Puerto Rico but only minor damage was reported. Prior to reaching Scandinavia, Faith passed over the Faeroe Islands. There was no known loss of life on the Islands or in Scandinavia and only minor damage was reported, similar to the usual autumn storms.

Hurricane Faith is, however, held accountable for the loss of one crewman’s life when high seas battered the Alberto Benati in the western Atlantic, one person’s life who was missing and assumed drowned off the coast of Denmark, and for the lives of two men who were attempting to cross the Atlantic in a rowboat.

I remember seeing a segment on The Weather Channel about Hurricane Faith's path. I know it was in the vinicity of Portugal's longitude. There was indeed another storm that almost made landfall along Portugal's coast.

I believe I read somewhere that the only continent to never get hit by a tropical cyclone is Antarctica. Of course that doesn't mean that every coast of all the other continents is a landfall target.

Interesting info about Faith and Arlene.
