Ian or Martin, without a doubt

Do not take anything I say seriously as a form of meteorological prediction. I am not a meteorologist; I don't think being in law school translates to any special knowledge. I am just a somewhat bullish amateur watcher.

Short answer: How the heck are we supposed to know?
Also short answer: Ian. Because why not

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Worth noting:
5/6 lists are already on the "third generation" I name.
Two of those names have already been used for impactful storms, but they didn't make it over the retirement hump.
The "I curse" is real, folks.

I hope none of them too soon, sounds like they're starting to run out of ideas for names

This post was probably an opinion of mine, and in no way is official. Please refer to http://www.hurricanes.gov for official tropical analysis and advisories.

Still amazes me how the name Isaac is still in use (he’s literally like last Jedi Luke Skywalker lol). Although I am willing to bet my life that at least within the next 3 or so List 4 seasons, Isaac will eventually be retired

The only reason why my name is still here is because either it's overshadowed by a stronger storm in the same year, or another name takes my place and that gets retired!
(It also could be me being here.

I'm sure that the NHC will become creative on the naming style.

It makes more sense to adopt the WPAC scheme where you have a large list of names and simply pick up where you left off. We are too obsessed with this rigid "must start with letter A" system that leads to the same letters around peak season being more likely used by extreme storms.

That is probably true. I'm going to go with Idalia though. The "I" name goes three straight in List 3 (Irene --> Irma --> Idalia --> ???) in 2023.

Didn't expect this thread to be over less than a month since it started.

What will be the second third-generation retired name? Ian seems like an obvious first now.

Here are the options:
List 1: Elsa, Fred, Imani, Julian
List 2: Alex, Farrah, Martin
List 3: Idalia
List 5: Andrea, Dexter, Imelda, Melissa
List 6: Isaias, Leah
(Ian's replacement is not included here as it's a 4th Gen name, but god forbid that happens.)
There's a real chance that Martin will kill this thread in one or two months...
(Edited to add Fiona's replacement)
(Edited again to add Julia's replacement in case it's retired, though it's uncertain)
(Edited in 2023 to remove "possible Julia's replacement")

Might want to update that soon once we know the name Fiona gets replaced with
Also in response to this question, I have a nagging feeling it will be either Martin or Idalia.

I'm thinking it will be Idalia, next year.

Not saying that it will certainly happen, but it seems like models like the GFS and CMC are insisting that there will be a late month October TS in the middle of the Atlantic, followed by what looks to be a rather strong and concerning Caribbean system that forms around Halloween. Assuming these two systems form as modeled, that Caribbean system could theoretically be named Martin. It would almost be a wickedly strange event if this question gets an answer by next month lol

I think there's a remote but non-zero possibility that if everything goes as wrong as they can, it will be Idalia.

Looking at your message from the 01L thread, this is kind of funny in hindsight. The one year we could have avoided the I curse, we end up not naming a storm

Category5Kaiju wrote:Perhaps this means that what would have been Idalia for the 2023 season now becomes Harold, so we manage to avoid the I curse for once
Take that Mother Nature!
Hopefully Idalia-to-be-but-should-have-been-Jose isn't as bad as some other Gulf storms, but with the way the models are trending, we could have our second 3rd generation retired I name, as well as a 5th consecutive season with a devastating I named storm...
